There are too many other ways to stay connected for this to really hurt. I think most people who qualify for the contest could do it.

I'm not someone who's married to their phone but I don't know if I can go a year without a smartphone. Unless I absolutely want to isolate myself with little to no contact in the wilderness, then it would be almost impossible for me to be without my cell phone this day and age.

On the flip side, it would be WONDERFUL to take a year with being without a phone just to enjoy focusing on myself and getting back in tune with the world without so much convenient technology.

They know that we grew up without cell phones and computers. We own paper maps. I still have a compass in my glove box.

Never leave home for the day without a snack, something to drink, and some kind of paper product.

When I started walking in the woods by myself years ago, my husband made sure that I had everything that I could possibly need. I had three ways to start a fire, a mirror, a marine flare, a space blanket, and a whole lot more.

They’ll just load up their laptops and iPads until they can use their smartphones again.

Ban all internet connectivity, then we’re talking difficult.
Right. I have a smartphone but dislike it so I never use it. But here I am, on the internet.
DH and I spent our "connectivity" time on our laptops. Out and about we might bring the phone but rarely use it for anything. Google translate, maybe.

I still can't figure out what the smartphone is capable of doing, though I've had it for a few years. I don't have data, but can use wifi. The problem is that I have to search for a network. That doesn't always go well.

For the record, my job CANNOT BE DONE without a smartphone. And don't even try to come up with the whole "how was it done before the advent of smartphones?" The level of efficiency, the turnaround times, and the precision accomplished with the tools of today's technological gadgets could not be done back then.

So, NO, I would NOT go a year without a smartphone for $100k.

What an arrogant comment. It's not a "fad." It's literally using a miniature computer on the go, while having a means of communicating, be it verbally or through video/Facetime, all in one.
What do you do that requires you to have to have a smart phone?

You can do that on an iPad and a regular laptop or computer with internet access. It's called wifi calling/text, and I can even connect my smart phone to this technology and run it off of that so I don't waste my minutes. My favorite thing to do is video chat online from my laptop to my friends all over the world, and I can do all of this while cooking a holiday feast, grooming my horses or sunning myself on the beach. I have one of those internet sticks I can stick into my laptop USB port, and it is connected to my internet provider. Cost me $70 to buy and 40$ a month for unlimited access with AT&T/Direct TV services (mind you, it works fine for me, where I just do simple video streaming services, but I have heard that those big into gaming might want to see if Comcast has something similar, since they will have larger bandwidths to work with)

Nothing that they will insist requires a "smart"phone actually does, of course. But the answers will be entertaining.
