Many of the earliest issues were/are insane/fascinating... to me anyway. I have them all on an old DVD collection. Bill Elder is my favorite. I must find a way to rip them to a HDD for easier viewing.

I will always miss the subscription tags: "Suitable for framing....or wrapping fish"..... or "Why kill yourself, just because you missed the last edition of MAD?"

Another vote for poking fun at movies and movie stars. I still remember one about the lost glory days of Doris Day, although I'm not sure why.

I think the first time I saw a copy of Mad was in about the 6th grade. But I got really hooked on it by my 7th grade Basic Skills Reading teacher. She would look for anything that would get us interested in reading. Including letting us read her copies of Mad in class for reading comprehension practice. I think it worked. When I started her class I was borderline illiterate. By the 8th grade I was getting Cs in a regular reading class. I guess I owe my literacy to mad Magazine. LOL.

We still have bookstores - including multiple Barnes and Nobles - with extensive magazine racks. Plus grocery stores and drug stroes (there seems to be a Walgreens and CVS every three blocks) with magazine racks with dozens of titles.

Gilbert Gottfried and Frank Santopadre have a nice long audio interview with Dick DeBartollo and Al Jaffee from three years ago at:

The magazine comes up frequently on the podcast.

I had a few issues and books and read several more that my friend had but the only thing I can remember about it are Spy vs Spy and the foldouts.

I had MADs going back to the late fifties. Thanks mom for tossing them when I moved out.

Not too long ago, I saw MAD in the magazine rack at Publix (leading grocery store chain in Florida). I even bought one just for old times sake (I discovered MAD when I was in high school in 1974, and was a regular reader until I graduated from college in 1981). Can't say that I will miss it, but it was enjoyable. Their movie satires were spot on! Once I had to do a report on a movie for a high school class, so I chose The Sting. By this time, the movie had been out for awhile, so MAD had already done the satire. I went to the moviehouse to see the film, and the scenes were almost just like in the satire! I could have saved money and just done the report from the satire! (Not really, but it did help in understanding what was going on).
