Hmmm...I'm thinking she put the dog down to go potty, stupidly didn't have it on a leash, and it ran off. She chased it, got lost and she's somewhere out there lost. Either that or this is an intricate murder plot by the husband, I don't buy the bird theories - at all.
That would be the better scenario because at least it offers more possibility they were going in the same direction.
Someone on the Sheriffs page mentioned using the scent dogs to track the path her dog walked. Wonder if that's possible.
They should be able to tell if a bird or animal snatched the dog. It would have marks on it or puncture wounds.
The husband did it.
She is at the bottom or a side of a cliff or in the mineshaft if one is nearby.
Surely the dog could wait another minute or two for him to park before relieving itself, the story makes zero sense to me that he dropped them off then went to park. Based on this I'd have to say this is the most likely scenario. Maybe he planned it, or maybe they got into a heated argument while they were out there and he just snapped.

Have you ever been in a car with a dog that has to go NOW? It’s not like reasoning with a child ... not saying that works for the best anyway but ..

Ok, so if the dog is wimpering and carrying on, why didn't he stop the car, let his wife and dog out and wait for them to get back in before parking it? And why didn't he get out with her and the dog, then they all get back in the car after the dog goes potty? There weren't any other cars around, it's not like he would be holding up traffic.
Don't. Buy. The. Story.
It sounds like something made up to explain away how his wife and dog could have vanished while he was around.

I'm usually the one with the dog when we are driving. For efficiency, I take the dog for a potty walk while my husband fills up with gas or whatever. The dog tells us when he needs to go. It's rare, but we have had to pull over for him to potty.
The police say the husband isn't a suspect. That's good enough for me.
If she had simply wandered off, lost and confused, she'd leave evidence (foot marks, broken branches, over-turn pebbles and leaves, etc, etc). There is NOTHING!
No signs of struggle (abduction).
No signs of her falling over a cliff.
No signs of anyone walking through the area.
She's an experienced camper and outdoors woman. As soon as she realized she was lost, she have started marking her trail, making it easy for rescuers to find her. She might even have decided to hunker down in place and wait in a place she could be seen from the sky. She most certainly would seek shelter and a means of making fire.
There is NOTHING. It's like something came out of the sky and beamed her up., leaving absolutely no trace.
To blame the husband because nothing else adds up is just wrong.
Just got an update and she's been found alive, being taken now to the hospital. It seems she just wandered off while her husband parked the car and got lost.
No giant bird, no falling down a deep canyon, no abduction, just plain lost from wandering too far from where her husband was coming back to.

Yippie! Thanks for this update.
