Am I guessing he will be a music teacher of some kind? My oldest is a music major in college here in Greensboro NC. I did notice on our last trip to the Dover area, even going as far as the MD state line only takes about 30 minutes. So it seems you can get to Dover easily from all directions. And Wilmington is less than an hour... if you need more hustle and bustle.

Talking Dover Neighborhoods

lash5107

peeweeaz here. My wife and I are in a similar situation as Marych, in that, we are in Arizona and seriously considering relocating to Delaware. We're originally from MD and both have families in MD. We've been to Delaware many times as tourists, but never to look at houses or apartments. I've been having the same problems as Marych in finding apartment/house rentals. There appears to be a lack of rentals in the smaller commnities, such as Magnolia, Selbyville, Frederica, etc. located in "lower, slower, Delaware", which is where we would like to settle. I noticed you found some apartment info that you PM'd to Marych. If you have a second, I would appreciate that info myself. You can send to peeweeaz@aol.com. Thanks a bunch.

Bob

Smile good luck

Hi peeweeaz,
This is what I told maryCh....I did a google search for DE realtors and came up with a site with a good listing of agents:
http://delawareontheweb.com/businesses/real_estate.htm
If you scroll halfway down, you get to Kent County.

I went to each of the sites to see if they listed rentals. Then I e-mailed seven of the agents two Sundays ago. I've only heard back from one (still after 2 weeks) who told me "I don't have pictures of rentals." The ones I found who seem to have rentals are John Welcome, Ron and Sandy Hohrein, Patterson-Schwartz, Burns and Ellis, Steve at DE Real Estate, and ERA Harrington. The information on the sites is not great, no pictures and/or information, which is why I emailed them all. It hasn't seemed very productive, so we're going to have to start to be a little more proactive and call them.

Also, my husband found a website that lists DE rentals:
www.newszap.com/dover/ (broken link)

Hope this helps! Good luck.

LA

Dover is a very nice area.

Behind Delaware State University, down College Ave., I believe they have new homes being built. Usually you will find the newer homes on the out skirts of Dover.

I'm Alumni of both Delaware State University (DSU) and University of Delaware (UD). I stayed with my parents in Magnolia and went to classes everyday at DSU. It was about a 15 minute trip to class.

Smyrna is about the same in time though it may be a little shorter due to less lights on the road.

There are really no major areas to avoid other than a couple of blocks around where State Street crosses West Division in downtown Dover.

You may find that West Division or Route 8 does contain some nice newer homes outside of the downtown Dover going west. Actually if you go far enough West you will run into the Amish community.

My dad retired from Dover AFB and you will find that there is a lot of military retirees here around the base.

There has been a lot of new housing communities breaking ground around Magnolia, Camden, Smyrna, and other towns around Dover. All of them to me seem to be nice places to raise a family and having streets that are nice to walk.

Wish you the best,

Tony

Cool Dover Neighborhoods

Thanks LA! You're a ok. I hope you, like Elizamary, find exactly what you're looking for. However, you and Elizamary are coming at this from somewhat different directions. She and her husband are retired, but you and your husband apparently are still in your working years. So, your needs are different. While I'm on that subject (retirement), I'd like to throw something out there and you all can gang up on me, tell me to take a hike or whatever.

My wife and I are 60 and 63, respectively and retired. I worked part-time in one of the many Native American casinos here in Arizona for three years and now am ready to not work at all. I got to thinking there are two ways for retirees to approach their living arrangements - to buy or to rent. If you like your space, puttering around with a hobby, such as gardening and the concept of home ownership appeals to you, then buying is your option. However, if you don't want to plow your profits from the sale of your existing home into another home and you're not all that concerned with leaving your heirs a nest egg, then renting is something to seriously consider. If you have a lot of equity in a house, there are only two ways to get at it. You sell and move again or you get a reverse mortgage that sometimes can be costly with upfront fees. The tax advantages of owning a home are slowly disappearing as the federal income tax standard deduction gets larger. I believe for 2006 it was $10,500 for joint filers. It's getting more and more difficult for retirees to itemize their deductions. So, if the medical deduction, the local state income tax deduction, the property tax deduction, mortgage interest deductions and charitable deduction go away, then there are no tax advantages to owning a home. So, I got to thinking - why not put my house sale profits into a very conservative investment and use the money earned to help defray my rental costs at perhaps a 55+ rental complex? Thus, my nest egg is preserved (except for being slowly gobbled up by inflation, which, I believe historically has averaged 3% per year) and my rent is less because of my earned income from the investment. If any of you want to play devil's advocate and blow holes in this thought, feel free!

Bob

Now Peeweez........Who is going to tell you to take a hike. Very good Ideas you have there.
Each person has to find a way to live the way they want with the money they have.
We did have a home to sell but had financed it. There is no way I could have retired and kept my home. The only way we could retire is to sell and pay off all our debt.
We like to live nice but don't have a lot of money so finding this community with all the extras was a God sent. We are doing fine but if something were to happen to my husband, I may have to sell and go in an apartment. We don't have a nest egg and are living off pension and social security. If I went first, he may be fine but we are not worrying about that now. I can always live with my sister or one of my daughters or rent a small apartment and be okay. I'm healthy enough to get a job if I choose.
The important thing for us is that we are doing this now and having a blast. Who knows what is down the pike and I'm not going to worry about it.
We take a lot of trips and have a trip to Europe planned for Nov and we are just going doing what we like to do and take it one day at a time.
I'm gratefull that we are able to play every day and have fun. Who knows what the future holds.
This is just us.
A lot of people are prepared and have a nice nest egg and that is great but we don't and have to take it one day at a time.

I agree, Dover is a very nice area. Most parts of it anyway. We visited West Dover where the Amish farms are and it is so peaceful. Found an excellent meat market and Amish market that sells beautiful fresh meats and grains.
The city of Dover is neat too. Nice state buildings. And there are a lot of Military down here.

Elizamary,
Thanks for letting me blow off some steam. I salute you for finding what you and your hubby want for now and will cross the other bridges as you come to them. Everyone could benefit by having a little of your attitude. I sometimes tend to worry too much about the future and forget that there's still the present to enjoy to the fullest. Thanks for reminding me.
