Charley, I lived in NYC for several years, and all I can say is that I'd better try Grotto again, because it has been a while, and there was a time when I thought the sauce so bland, that it would be the last pizza I'd consider comparable to New York pizza. Just goes to show that sometimes you have to revisit places, products, pizza, and even people (!) you've
renounced in the past.

LA, Romano's on Walker Road? I probably drive past there at least twice a month and I've never even considered it! Thanks for the tip!

Default Romano's

Yup, Romano's. The pizza is pretty good, but the pasta dishes we've tried are so-so. Probably won't order those again.

Any seafood recommendations? Somewhere casual, not super-fancy.

LA,

Seafood. You'd think there would be many good restaurants in this area for fish and seafood, wouldn't you? Not so.

Sambo's Tavern about twenty minutes east of Dover in the tiny town of Leipsic is very casual and people come from all over (and I do mean all over, including NASCAR drivers, etc.) for the crab. They're not cheap, but are truly delicious. There's a room with a river (leading to bay) and marina view, tables covered in newspaper. Yes, there are other choices besides crab.

Sambo's is not a racist name, by the way. There was a huge public discussion of this years ago, but Sambo's has been there forever and, as I recall, it was a family name.

The restaurant closes before Thanksgiving, and reopens around the end of March. We usually go there for lunch, around 11:30.

Lori

All this talk about food makes me want to binge... and its almost 1:30 in the morning! We heard about Romano's on one of our many visits prior to moving here, but never got a chance to try it. We'll definitely have to check it out, as hubby is an Islander as well (Long Island, that is).

I'm still trying to figure out where the Amish merchants are? I understood there are furniture places, as well as farm products & fresh baked, home made foods as well. Now THAT will do me in!

You're talking about Spence's Flea Market, which I believe is on South New Street in Dover. We're just coming to the end of a jar of relish that we bought at the Amish store and realized that next time, we need to buy three or four jars of ALL the selections we made. We can't get this in New York.

Welcome to Byler's Country Store

I grew up within 20 miles of PA Amish country. This as close as you'll get in DE. Spensce's is only open on Tuesdays (maybe Fridays) and has Amish vendors.

I love Byler's..............you are correct, it's pretty Amishie.

Spencers Bazzar has everything and anything from junk to Amish meats. Interesting place.

Default hungry!

Sorry I derailed my own topic with food, but hey, ya gotta eat.

Wow, the mention of Amish reminded me that I've almost gotten in a couple of accidents. I'm not used to horse/carriages being on the road!

BTW- bagel update - I tried "Some Guys Bagels"...um, well let's just say that this Long Islander is not a fan.

Spences Bazaar! I used to work there at the auction Good place to buy Amish products, and interact with the down-to-earth people.

I just spent the day (and a few bucks) at Spence's... worthy of a separate thread. I found Drake Spence a very interesting fellow!
Will start the new thread later this evening, I hope.
