Depends how you define pretension.

A Prius driver can brag about how it is eco-friendly it is (it is very fuel-efficient, but not eco friendly in the sense of how its made). That would be considered pretentious. No matter how eco friendly hybrids/small cars/whatever can be, cars still harm the environment one way or the other.

She may or may not be pretentious. I don't know her.

But Denverites will view her that way...such is life. People love to hate.

Agreed. And since the poster and his wife probably don't care about image, it really shouldn't matter (and I suspect it doesn't matter to them) what people think of them for driving a car around that works for them.

After all.....it's not like they went out and bought a Subaru

I care to keep her car nice and in working order. Car drives like a dream. Honestly I don't care if people think she is pretentious for driving the car. I know she doesn't care and I know she is far from pretentious.

I also don't get how Subaru drivers are considered pretentious. Subs are great here in the winter. I call them practical over pretentious.

As somebody else said, eye of the beholder.

I meant it in jest as I rather lack Subaru, but then I'm likely a pretentious Coloradan in that regard, and I just don't care.

I think "eye of the beholder" sums it up nicely.

Frankly, I think as long as anyone is doing something reasonable and justifiable then I don't see a problem with it...but some people are very caught up in "image." By and large, I ignore those people and carry about my business. If I'm right, then it usually gets proven sooner or later. If I'm wrong, then I'll have discovered that by experience and be wiser for it.

rather than pretentious, they may be posers... imagine bike and ski racks that have never actually been used and 4WD that has never been engaged.

If you want Denverites to be pretentious, get a spaceship. Otherwise they likely wouldn't care.

Its the large Lexus and BMW SUVs being driven around that scream pretension.
May be, but actually those Lexus SUVs are very good offroad vehicles. I wouldn't have guessed it, except several years back we went out to mountains with a friend in his. I'm not talking smooth dirt roads, I'm talking rough, steep forest roads in the middle of nowhere. I was really impressed with how it handled.

If it is the LX then it is based on the Land Cruiser, and I have no doubt as to the validity of your story.
