Oh ya, I remember last winter. Nasty, over 200 inches of snow here on the Palmer Divide. Sort of what prompted today's post - seemingly so different from last winter....but it's only early December...

Just heard on TV we had a record high today: 72 degrees in Denver. But a look at the record highs for this month shows most days in the 60s to low 70s.

Here's a link to a chart of December record temperatures in Denver. NWS Denver/Boulder, CO - Product Viewer

The highest temperature ever recorded in Denver in December was 79 on December 5, 1939. Seventeen December dates have records above 70 (now 18, because yesterday set a new record). Record highs for all December dates range from 65 to 79. Notice that the record lows for the month range from -6 to -25. Brrr. There's a difference of 104º between the record highs and lows for December. December 22 and December 24 both show nice symmetry; on both of those dates, the record high is 70º, and the record low -25º.

If you study the record highs and lows (for any U.S. city), you'll notice that most of the record lows are pre-1950 and most of the record highs are post 1950. You can definitely see that it's warming. (I use weather.com to look at this data). You can also do research here: NWS Denver-Boulder, CO - Local Climate Page I check each month and for the past 2.5 years since I moved back to Denver, almost every month has overall above normal temps. For instance, November 2007 was about 3 degrees above normal.

Yesterday was wonderful though. I couldn't believe when I woke up before dawn, the thermometer said 57!

Not to debate global warming, but the NWS data at NWS Denver/Boulder, CO - Product Viewer for December shows that 18 of the record highs are pre-1950; only 11 lows though are post 1950.

The best thing about this post was that it was started by Averie-Jay a while back, and I'm pretty sure she has since moved here because she has been nice enough to post many gorgeous pictures of her experiences since moving here. Glad you're enjoying Colorado so much, Averie!!!

Default colo springs-monument-charles

Generally has warmer warms than denver. If you are near monument that is indeed unseasonably warm weather for the time of your post.

It is saturday and I am looking out the window at the start of a long day of light snow, in the 30s, and that is most like denver this time of year, interspersed with sunny days.

I would say the snowy days are in the minority, but I swear EVERY time we schedule some family activity, the weather is lousy. Today we are trying to go ice skating at Louisville's outdoor rink. When we went to get a pumpkin, we picked the ONLY bad day in October! It snowed for Thanksgiving when we went down to COS to have dinner at my niece's. I must have a jinx.!
