Though it's only been 4 months since we closed last year's thread on this topic, we may as well open one for the upcoming winter season.

Anyone having a prediction on this winter's snow in Denver should feel free to state them.

It's going to be a good one!!! I think it's about time. It's been a long time since one of our big snows, and this is the year. This morning's radio show said that there is a small possibility we'll see flakes this Friday. Yay!

My "prediction" for heavy snow is based on the heavy summer monsoon this year.

We had a heavy summer monsoon in 2006 that was followed by a heavy snow season which is the year Denver airport closed for 3 days on a 22 Dec blizzard, followed by another blizzard within a week, and another big dumper in January. Not at all scientific, I'm just betting on patterns that repeat.

No prediction, but here is a picture I took at A-Basin on Saturday.

The general consensus is that this winter will see some high accumulation as a continuation of the trend toward heavy rainfall this past August and September. I do tend to agree with that, but am not entirely convinced yet. True, it rained exceptionally hard this summer, especially with the heavy floods we had a few weeks back. There was also some heavy rain in August down in Springs and up toward Palmer Divide. But other than that, it wasn't that great. It was still very dry in June and July and the monsoon season didn't really get going until mid August. I'm thinking (and hoping) that it will be heavier than the last two years (which isn't saying much) but nothing like what we saw in 06/07. In any case it does seem that the jet stream has dropped back down our way, so things should start to 'improve' from a non-drought standpoint.

All I know is it's time for the "great blizzard of ____". And it better not happen when I've planned to take time off of work.

I'm driving back from Grand Junction to Denver this Friday. Does 70 get very bad? I've been wondering about the railroad arm things at different spots since moving here. Does it get closed down for prolonged intervals, or just long enough for the plows, whatever to do their job?

It can get bad, but just take your time on the highway. There will always be nutjobs who think that the snow and ice doesn't apply to them and haul ass, just take your time and enjoy the white goodness.
