Well, having been one who had at least one glass, sometimes two, of red wine every night for the past year and a half, I can't say that I saw any real health benefits. I still had elevated BP, and I gained 30 pounds. Like any other alcoholic drink, the wine bloated me to where you could see it in my face. Plus, the red wine made me crave snacks, so that didn't help. I would probably say from my experience, there is no truth to red wine being beneficial to weight loss or aiding in lowering BP.
Since I've cut out regular consumption of alcohol, my BP isn't as bad and people are commenting on my weight loss, even though I haven't really lost a significant amount of weight. They comment on how they can see it in my face. Even though I am a long ways to my fitness goal, I already feel a lot healthier not drinking than I did when I was having a regular glass of wine. Now, someone else might have a totally different outcome than me, but my experience has taught me that wine is just like any other alcoholic drink - probably not good to have it on a daily basis.
I had somewhat of the opposite experience. I was a non-drinker with low HDL levels. Started drinking a glass of red wine every night and the HDL shot up into the "healthy" range. Had no effect on my weight (if anything, it made me not want snacks), but I was already at low body fat levels.
In the final analysis, a person has to figure out what works for his or her individual case.

BTW, you could have done the same thing by taking fish oil supplements. Out of anything I have ever taken, statins included, fish oil was always the most effective for me with my cholesterol numbers. I, also, have had a few other issues that had effected my health (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, low testosterone levels,) so the alcohol wasn't going to help me anyway. If anything, it made it worse.
If you can stand the taste, I guess. Personally, I'd rather enjoy the really good stuff, but have it much less often.

This. I've tried the low carb, low calorie beers.....they are nasty. Would rather have the good stuff as a treat than to drink the other junk.
