I have GI condition that has improved greatly by removing wheat as well as most other grains. Don't know whether it is gluten that causes problems, celiac test said I'm not celiac however the gold standard is not the blood test but internal biopsy during colonoscopy (I never had done). When you go gluten-free the biopsy/blood test can not be done because there will be no evidence (no gluten markers because no gluten consumed).

My DNA test says I'm 4X more likely to be celiac than general population but I rely more on my gut telling what bothers it than any test.

I was a vegetarian at time of getting GI problems and consumed many types of bread/baked goods and made my own too. Whole wheat was a small part of diet then.

It was not easy going gluten-free, the world revolves around bread products and pasta. But better health is worth it.

I avoid wheat (whole grain and white) because I avoid the carbs. Carbs raise blood sugar, which raises insulin. Since insulin is a hormone that causes the body to store fat it is very helpful to reduce insulin levels when trying to lose weight.

Before I switched to a low carb diet I was eating a mix of whole grains and white grains.

Pretty much my situation verbatim -- I'm eating a largely mediterranean diet and avoiding sugar -- except that my grains before were probably mostly processed. Lots of junk and fast food, unfortunately.

It can work for weight loss.... but it could be the carb cutting too.
I can't eat gluten. OH made his entire home GF when I moved in. When I discovered what was wrong, changed my eating I started to gain weight (by muscle mass- yay body using nutrition properly. look slimmer/healthier though- before I was skinnyfat. not a good look)

My counterpart- he ate less then me often. watched calories classified I forget if it was overweight or into obese. A person who gains weight looking at a cookie. Anyway, he was dropping body fat effortlessly and stopped "watching his portions". He'll never be super lean, but he's much happier he found he has better energy at work too it's a physical job..

removing Gluten isn't enough for weight loss I'll assume. you can buy any manner of garbage food GF that are VERY high in cheap carbs breads, pastas, potato chips, cookies, cakes, brownie mix all GF.
But veggies and meats are not only nutritionally dense but naturally GF, cheaper and for someone like me (lots of mineral problems) upping natural fats to use nutrients better and keeping carbs lower makes a huge difference. Occasionally I will have GF junk food. but usually if I make pasta sauce it's over spaghetti squash.

Funny ten years ago mention low carb and people went crazy. now almost everyone I know is using it to manage their waistlines. if calories in/out worked as I was told in school I'd have been huge and my OH would have been the skinny one...

There is a giant "low carb" experiment going on now with all the people eating this way being the research subjects. It will be interesting to see how the results turn out in another 15-20 years down the road.

It may be hard to find anyone who actually went 15 or 20 years eating low carb.

Low carb is not new. It's been around for well over 100 years.

There has been a ton of research on low carb diets. Low carb may not be your thing but it isn't new or untested.
