Honest Dawn - I wouldn't recommend anything that would hurt your little man! I do recommend prong collars. Read up and make sure you are using it correctly. It is NOT a disciplinary tool but a training tool. I think once you see it and feel that its a pressure device you will be more comfortable about using it to help Artie understand that pulling Mom through the snow and ice is a no-no.

I think you should definitely give the prong collar a try..Sydney is not a puller but I had to watch my parents two dogs (along with him) for the past two weeks and let me tell you..their lab is a big puller..now Sydney is only 50 lbs and she's probably about double his size..so the first day I'm there I took her for a walk and refused to use the prong collar because I just felt too bad using it...I think I almost lost my arm when she saw another dog and she's an older lady too...she's got some strength, so I gave in and tried the prong collar (also tried it on my arm and it just feels like pressure no pain). And she is 100x better using that collar and clearly doesn't mind it. It doesn't hurt to give it a try but after the past 2 weeks, I am SO thankful for a medium sized non-puller, non-barker..and also realized I'm content with my one dog for the time being . Good luck and hope the leg is healing well!

I used a prong collar on a 2 yr. old rottie who had never been walked on a leash. He had a bad habit of turning abruptly and lunging and vehicles that passed by and on another rottie that like to start out like a race horse out of the chute. It worked great on both of them and I didnt have to use the collar long.

Yikes! I always thought Labs were so easy.

So, Sydney doesn't pull or bark, huh? TRADE???

The leg's getting much better, thanks!

Ah, I'm hoping, too, that the collar won't have to be used long-term.

When I got him the citronella collar for barking in the backyard early in the morning, I didn't have high hopes. But it worked! And in less than a week, I didn't even have to turn the thing on -- I just put it on him and he knew... "Oh. This thing. No barking or I get sprayed. Dammit!"

My friend who I walk with in the mornings offered to try it with me -- me wearing it and pulling, and him at the end of the leash. Yeah, yeah, and hilarity ensued after that "joke" of his.

Haha, let me re-phrase that...he didn't used to bark but after spending two weeks with his two furry, rambunctious cousins, he now enjoys barking at things that pass the window since they barked at even a leaf blowing past the house..since we're in an apartment complex, this is a habit I'll need to break ASAP..but as for pulling, we got really lucky and he's just never been a puller...I'm sure my next dog will be the devil though because sometimes I think Sydney is too good to be true. And I'd love for Artie to come for a play date but I decided after dog sitting that we will not be getting another dog until after I get a palce with a backyard that's a bit bigger than a two bedroom apt! But back to the prong collar, go for it! Its worth a try! And glad the leg is healing

I'll take that as a "maybe."
