Manufacturing is just another symptom of the problem.
Big picture is have some serious dumb going on the business leadership side. Most of the US business and technology decisions are driven by Graduate level folks -- about 5% or so of the population. But when you look at the numbers for who goes into business school and the MBA path -- it is the dummies. Don't blame me for pointing it out -- the GRE scores do not lie.
We have a long slug of economic and business dummies to get past -- GW and his type are just typical of the relatively dumb folks we have turned the keys to the Nation over to. Most think the object of the exercise is turn some bucks for themselves while screwing over the rest of US. Guess they forget that they are part of US. Just plaiin dumb. For a while the tech leadership covered for the dumb in the boardroom, and the masses of asses being Boxer the Horse. (from Animal Farm -- Boxer always said "I will just work harder." Wound up being shipped to the glue factory.)
But all of US cannot cover the dumb of them. When the folks of America figure out they are following fools, we might wake up and have a chance. But dunno.
The US still has the largest economy in the world.
We are not in a recession and although it is clear there is a slow down in process it is not sure a recession is in the near future.
We could not expect to dominate the world for the long term and it is healthy that other countries are gaining ground... stands to reason that we will be a smaller percentage of the whole.
Although many companies have made bad decisions that have hurt competitiveness, much of the blame can be put on years of congressional decisions. Congress has spent so much time on politics and taking care of supporters that we lack effective policies in just about every private and public sector.
The economy in this country is still strong but some strong pragmatic leadership is needed to slow the deterioration of our position. It seems to me that government priorities continue to make it harder to do business in this country than others.

and to be honest, its not so mcu the politicians as the voters
voters dont want real change. cause real change will be hard and pricey, and a congressman that votes for that will be thrown out. we want everything, we want it free, and we want it to not interfere in our way of life.

We are still the engine that pulls the rest of the world. And there is nobody in 2nd place right now. Maybe in 10 years China will begin to get closer but they have a long way to go to even catch Japan much less us.
Unless we change our ways we will be reduced to a shadow of our former greatness. We are now just living off the accomplishments of past generations, and running up debts that will strangle future generations. The problem is that in order to solve a problem you must first recognise it exists, and so far we are not even near that point. The only thing we seem to be really good at anymore is being stupid, greedy, lazy and fat. The reasons we rose to greatness in the past is were that we were well educated, we worked hard, we had high maoral standards, we believed in the principals the country was founded on, and we were involved in running our communities, our schools, and our goverment. We don't do any of those things now, why should we expect to prosper?

i agree, china is gaining.
but china is going to start faltering soon. they are doing to much damage to their environment in an effort to grow. people are choking in the cities. rivers cant be drunk from.
