The first biracial president....
I'm so sick of the whole black president thing.
I will be in class on Tuesday and I hope my professors will be teaching.
I can TIVO it at home.

It's funny that people feel that anyone with one drop of "black" blood is black, but now people want to say that Obama is not.

If you have class, you should go to class. But try to catch a glimpse if you can, is my advice to someone probably the age of my daughters! You'll be glad you did.

No. Perhaps due to content BUT that was historical too.

They are in school to learn. And to be honest most kids could give a crap about watching something like this unless they are older and have an understanding of it, to them it's just a FREE PASS out of class.
Pulling your kid out to play video games for the day instead of leaving them in school to watch the inauguration because they're in school to learn..... isn't that like an oxymoron?

Let's take the whole black/not black issue off the table and look at the inauguration for what it is--it is a history lesson, it is a civics lesson, it is a time for children to see LIVE a very important part of how our government works. I am guessing they have been studying in some why the election process, probably even held a mock election in their school, now they can see the inauguration live. How is this wasting 2 class periods? Sorry folks but this is WHAT makes our country so different and this is what our forefathers died to protect. It doesn't matter who is being sworn in, this is our COUNTRY. How could anyone not want their children to learn more about our government and how it works?

actually my children dont own video games thanks very much...

We are supposed to see everyone in this country the same, and that's what i do. Everyone is one color to me and i dont treat ANYONE differently because of their race.
So why should i make a big deal about a black president when i wouldn't make a big deal about a white president??

Lets stop putting the man on a pedestal for gods sake and save the celebrating for when he actually DOES something other then appeal to the mass majority of movie stars etc...

The school board relented and now they are making ALL of their students watch it. So my daughter comes home and says they are making EVERYONE gather in the gym to watch it.

What do you think?
What are the schools in your area doing?
With the way we are nowadays it can be recorded and viewed later?
Kids can watch bits of it that are important in history class and discuss it?
Most adults are going to be working and won't be able to watch it, so why not view it together as a family that night on tivo or whatever?

The one "issue" I'm having is that the kids are going to be missing 2 class periods of instruction in order to view it when the day before they were out for a Federal holiday. This means that a 4 day instructional week has now been cut down to practicially 3 in at least 2 subjects. I'd personally MUCH RATHER watch it as a family TOGETHER. I know I'm not going to be able to see it myself "live" as I'm already scheduled for medical appointments that are not going to be canceled.
Because this is HISTORY that will alter the course of the nation, it is only fitting that the students watch it, discuss it and take away the following values:
1. Be thankful you live in a nation that embraces peaceful change through the ballot box.
2. Yes you can! Even if you are black, female, Hispanic- whatever. In America, yes you can make it happen for you!
3. Change is not always easy. It takes hard work. Even 45 years ago, Barrack Obama could dream as far as the back of a trash truck at best. It was like that back then. We changed. It was not easy but the right thing was done in the end.
4. Go forth from school and serve your country that has given so much to you. Serve it with pride and honour- in uniform or out of uniform.

If I had a child in today's world I would do everything in my power to be able to homschool him/her. I wouldn't let my child in a public school. "The state" now acts as if they own the children that attend. I fear it will only get worse with our incoming president and his socialistic plans.

I don't think the importance of the inauguration is based on the race of the president elect, although it is an historic event.

In my opinion the thing that makes the inauguration of a president an important educational event is the fact that it illustrates how our government works. It provides kids with an opportunity to see how we hand over power, bloodlessly, and peacefully. They know there was an election. They got to see the beginning of the process. Now they should see how a new administration begins.

I was not an Obama supporter during the campaign. My support for kids watching this process has nothing to do with him and everything to do with providing kids with an educational experience that is RELEVANT to their lives.
