“A specific event risk assessment was performed and the conclusion was that the risk was higher than normal. Based on this assessment, the decision was made that the university and Sun Bowl would not be an appropriate venue for this specific event."

If the above was the reasoning behind the decision. I am curious, what variables did they use in this so called assessment? How would this event be different from the Monster Trucks, a UTEP sporting event, or even the boxing match last week?

Not a whole lot of information is being given or reasoning for that matter. They are using cute little words like "risk"

higher than normal? huh? What's a normal risk for the Sun Bowl? Another hand job? Bevo pooping on the turf?

If it was higher than normal, then what is causing the risk? shouldn't we know if there is a threat?

Is it the structure, fire control, crowd control?

Too many questions and not a whole lot of answers...

All this does is send one message, "El Paso is not safe" What about recruits to UTEP? If they got wind of this?

Very annoying situation!

As per Paul Foster, this is not being called an "event specific" hazard. We shall see how this develops.

This is a huge mess. I wonder if the fight promoters will sue the chancellor.

The more they deny the security risk, the more you tend to believe that was what it is about.

If something did happen at this event, that isn't going to send the message that El Paso is safe. All you have to do is look at the sister city and some of the problems with the soccer teams. We shouldn't invite some cartel violence just to make it seem that we think nothing can happen being this close to Juarez.

How many people were actually going to go? I think most of the people complaining were probably not even planning on going. let's be honest, El Paso. How many acts have passed up our city due to lack of attendance or cancelled last minute due to low ticket sales? If this thing does get approved it better sell out!

If it doesn't work out in El Paso, I kinda hope they do. But at the same time how will this affect UTEP?

It was going to have a great crowd, no way the promoters would have done it otherwise...

With all the publicity, if the event can somehow stay in El Paso it's going to be a hot ticket for sure! People like big things, and this was a big match.

When good concerts or acts come, they draw well...

This isn't junior high. The more the mayor, the city manager, the FBI, the DEA, PD, and S/O say there is no risk, the more you should believe the UT system was wrong.

Unless you have a message board agenda to get your ill informed opinion across.

What has happened with their soccer teams?

BTW, this event was going to be in El Paso, Texas.

Also, it was going to be a sport called boxing and not a sport called soccer.

What is the mailing address for cartel violence? Do they have a PO Box?

Anywhere from 30,000 to 54,000 people were expected to attend.

You didn't have to plan on going to know this is a sham of a decision.

You tell us. There were 50K in the Sun Bowl back to back nights in March. There was a play in the Plaza that was wildly successful. I can think of events for wrestling, boxing, concerts, and plays that were successful here so far in 2012.

Many acts pass up our city because we do not have a true 20K arena. The Don Haskins Center is too small for a lot of acts.

It never needed to sell out. The promoters know what they are doing. That is why some boxing events go to the Coliseum, some to The Don, some to Cohen. This one needed to be at the Sun Bowl. Anything over 30K would have been a grand slam for El Paso.
