sigh

How many times must this be said? Candidates always ALWAYS lower expectations for themselves before a debate and set them as high as possible for their opponent. This is strategy 101. Both Democrats and Republicans are doing it. Democrats say President Obama has no time to prepare and Romney will probably win, meanwhile Republicans say Obama is more experienced in debates and thus will likely win.

By doing this, even the smallest win in the debate can be made to be a big deal. And if they do happen to lose it's much easier to manage the blow since "it was expected".

Seriously! Heck, even in sports you really don't see teams or coaches saying "yeah we are going to stomp that team", and if they do they are reprimanded.

A candidate has everything to lose by being cocky about the debates.

Romney has put himself in a position where his only chance at recovery is a knock-out in the debates.

My bet is he doesn't have the horsepower.

Well, we already know he has one - and it's a very special horsey, too.

I think this talk about the debates being a potential game changer is just media/political talking head hype. Romney has been campaigning for 5 or more years, Obama has been president for 4 and campaigned a few more than that. What is there to learn from a debate that is not already known? Neither guy is a fool, both will do well enough, make their points and few if any minds will change one way or the other. People have already decided and they will be watching and will, predictably, say their guy won. The undecideds will be watching America's Next Top Model, or Dance Moms, or something other than the debate.

A little something for everyone to enjoy.

Top 10 memorable debate moments – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

Looking at those old clips, in particular the Reagan ones it struck me that humor is something that is in short supply in today's political environment.

It also makes me laugh at the people that are trying to compare Romney to Reagan in order to make the Carter/Reagan analogy fly.

I think you're right.

Maher said it best on Real Time last week: undecideds are morons, so why are we catering to them? If at this point they can't chose between the two candidates, they don't deserve to vote. Most probably aren't even paying attention, and will eine-meine-mine-mo when they get to the ballot box.

Better to focus on turnout and perhaps peeling some voters off of the other side.
