I was told by a library patron years ago that the Supreme Court of the United States allows for communities to decide what books they want for their community library. I never checked on this since the library I worked for did not censor except to not put objectionable books in the childrens section. I would recommend that any parent take their child to the library and see what that child is checking out, because I would not want my child reading some of the books I have seen.

My real objection comes when a teacher assigns a book as required reading that has values stated that undermine the parents way of life and how they are trying to raise their children. Parents should have a right to censor the books their children read. The authority to be a responsible parent is a God-given right and the government should not have the right to take that away. I think parents with conservative and moral views are being discriminated against a lot in the public schools today. This needs to stop!

I never censored anything my children read, but I think I would have been a better parent if I had. The result is that my children know some of the things they were exposed to that maybe they should not have been and they are like bull dogs when protecting their children.

Mayor Palin: A Rough Record - TIME
tein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

It's crucial to many of the right wing types to either rewrite history or to revise history, and in some instances, ban history altogether.

Every book she deemed worthy to be removed must be noted by someone in the DNC and a clear profile who who this woman really is can be figured out.

It took her 6 colleges to get a degree in something, so I'm guessing she is not exactly qualified to judge what is, and what is not, acceptable outside of her narrow theological prism.

I hate censorship of any kind. Where is the freedom of speech, where is our liberty. All down the drain.

Generally, if you are going to make a broad statement, you should be able to follow it up with a link. A simple google search turned up nothing for me.

Please document this. I would like to hear more.

I do not associate the neocons in the Republican party with those who are ideological conservatives. The conservatives of yesteryear, unfortunately, are a dying lot. They stood for values and freedom and not control and power.

I am asking this because not every book written ends up in libraries. They do have limited funds. I have seen some books that were very poorly written and not entertaining or very instructive.

I have seen, however the Turner Diaries and Mein Kampf. I thought the latter boring and the former not well written and a waste of time, but I would not forbid such books just because I do not like them. I don't think
most libraries do, either.

Please, if you can get more info on where the librarians were let go and over which books, I would very much appreciate it.

** Taxes were shifted so sales tax increased and property taxes on large corporate owned properties decreased. Result, whether you're filthy rich or dirt poor, you're going to pay a SALES TAX ON YOUR FOOD while wealthy land owners found a decrease in their tax rates. SOUND FAMILIAR to the Bush tax scheme?

I dunno..this is sounding more like the supposed "tax and spend" Democrats. Who's the taxer and spender HERE??
As mayor she inherited a balanced budget and she left it in a deficit.

I read an article that said she did fire her, or at least started the process. She either stopped or reinstated the woman when the public heard of it and started protesting.

The reason why people are not speaking is the same reason that they don't speak of certain things in Russia - they are afraid of her.

That is very true as she has a track record of disposing those who oppose her. Since many know the dirt about her and kin that is about to come out they may feel come November December she will still be governor and then lookout. Evidently the Enquirer has statements and dirt they are going to publish. The question will be the credibility of the accusers as they are involved in a family fued.

It may not be commonly known, but the qualification to be a library director requires a MASTER'S DEGREE in library and information services--so I assume the library director had a master's in her field and is well versed in how to operate a library.

Therefore, she does not need the mayor, of all people, butting into her professional business, telling her how to do her job.

Freedom of speech, freedom on the press -- a professional librarian is trained to defend these freedoms. You would be amazed at how much great literature has been BANNED in the past just because someone was offended. A naughty word or a thought that someone did not agree with -- so they banned the book. I think just about anyone can find something in a book that would offend them but that doesn't mean that we should prevent other people from reading that book.

I'll try to find a list of books that have been banned from libraries in the past to prove my point. This is scary stuff -- "When books burn, people will burn." I heard that statement regarding Nazi Germany and it comes back to me when I think of censorship.
