I understand the barter system has some merit to it.
Not really! It's very inefficient and cumbersome. Remember money is more than just a medium of exchange and store of value; it's also a unit of account. This is kind of first week stuff from "Introduction To Economics". Unit of account means that each dollar (or DMark, or Yen or Pound Sterling) is worth exactly what each other one is.
No one has to haggle over the "value" of your $. If your doctor bill is $4,000 and you pay in chickens, which value do we assign to the chickens? Seller value, FOB barnyard? Buyer's value, FOB grocery? Live? Dressed? Raised in a factory farm or free range? Rhode Island Reds or Foghorn Leghorns?
BTW, if you ever get audited by the IRS, one of the first questions they will ask you once you're (un) comfortably seated in their office is; "do you engage in any barter transactions in the tax year we're discussing?"
^^And what if the doctor has all the chickens s/he needs? What's s/he supposed to do then? Sell the chickens? That puts the burden of getting the money out of them on the doctor, who presumably is busy running a medical practice, and probably doesn't want to get into the poultry selling business.
My problem with Sue Lowden has nothing to do with this chicken comment. It's that in past years her and her husband donated money to Harry Reid!!! Plus she has made comments that lead me to believe she is middle of the road and not a true conservative. I'm going to vote for the REAL conservative in the Nevada GOP primary Sharron Angle.
That being said if Lowden wins the primary I will proudly vote for her. I have much more of a problem with Harry Reid's liberal agenda than I do Sue Lowden's silly chicken barter idea which is never going to happen anyway.
Hate to burst the ole bubble, but "gifts" brought to doctors no longer can be kept for personal use. I get "goodies" all the time and have to share around with the rest of the staff. Yes, it will be a fun day when bartering back in vogue. Of course with all the third world "doctors" BoBo will need to bring in, offering up the fatted calf or goat may just be business as usual.

I did not know that! Not that our patients bring anything except food, anyway, which gets devoured immediately.
Aww man I was hoping she could unseat Harry Reid but now I don't know.
