What's so special about this building? How this box is different from other boxes?

I like the Shard too. I think it's a matter of personal tastes. To me London already has enough fancy ornate Georgian architecture (as great as it is). A bit of modern steel and glass gives the city variety, depth.
Of course the old cities can have an addition of "modern steel and glass."
They just shouldn't be the monstrosities that clearly destroy the original architectural idea of European cities.

I don't know, it looks like a machine. I don't think it's a 'monstrosity.' If you want monstrosity try this out:
The new 'Walkie Talkie' skyscraper in London is absolutely hideous IMO, and it melts cars. It looks alright from the front tough.
To be honest, this is nothing compared to the New York skyline, both in number and height of tall buildings. I think it is even preferable to have no skyscapers at all like Paris or Amsterdam than to have only one which only barely keeps up with the ones in New York and Chicago. The Shard just looks unnatural like this. It is the same with houses, cars, boats, rv's, roads, everything is more and bigger in the US so please let's stop pretending we can keep up.
