Air pollution is high (a lot of diesel motors), particularly in summer
That is absolutely not true. Paris has one of the lowest air pollution in Europe, as per the measures published by the UN for all the cities of the world.
I say it the way it is. In 2015, considering that AC is a luxury, and keeping stores on the most visited avenue in the world closed at 9pm is just so backward. You should see the baffled faces of the Chinese or Indian tourists when they try to enter the stores at 8:50pm and rude security guards with no command of English forbid them entrance. They just can't understand how that's even possible in a renowned world city like Paris. Neither do I.
Paris isn't as hot and muggy as Madrid, so AC isn't needed as much.
And your claim that 9 PM closing is "too early" is nonsense. Stores close at 9 PM in other world cities like NYC, London, Tokyo, etc. Where is it common where stores typically are open much later? Certainly not in Madrid.

Due to urban heat island (UHI) effect, Paris is as hot as Madrid at night. Buildings get incredibly hot, and the heat is not evacuated during the night. Comparing with the south of France, afternoon temperatures in Paris are cooler than in the south of France, but it feels hotter in Paris due to the UHI effect and the buildings accumulating heat over time.
AC is absolutely needed in Paris from May to late September, but unfortunately the people here are so backward in their heads when it comes to AC (they think it's a health hazard, or they think it's a luxury, or they think you have to be "a man" and AC is only for sisies, etc). Shopping in Paris in June, July, and August can become real hell, especially with all the neons and spotlights in the stores.

Lol. Yeah right! We're in 2015, not in the 1980s anymore. Update your data.

No, you're just making up stuff. Madrid is much hotter than Paris. They aren't even close in average temps. UHI affects Madrid as much as Paris, and Paris is never particularly hot/humid at night.

Again, you're just making up stuff. 9 PM is a typical closing time around the world, including Madrid. If you go to El Corte Ingles, or another major Spanish store, the hours are usually the same as in France or in other countries.
In terms of ethnic riots and burned cars, I believe Paris wins hands down over Madrid. And since "Charlie" one can add terrorism too.
That's absurd, and pretty much emblematic of this thread.
I assume this thread consists of a bunch of angry, unemployed Spaniards living in their economic depression and jealous of their much wealthier, more cosmopolitan, more popular neighbor to the north.
Paris bashing has always been many people's hobby every time they get a chance. I simply don't understand the reason behind it. It is as if these people are upset by the fact that millions of people around the world love the city so they take every chance to make it sound a horrible place - Paris is full of dog poop, rude Parisians and north African thieves! And what's worth, tourists, you know those kind of money spending people every city and every country is so worried about and does everything to prevent from coming!
Despite Paris' plethora of problems, I will choose to visit/live in it over cities with great reputation such as Bern, or Copenhagen, or Munich, or Helsinki or Amsterdam any day of the year. Madrid is a great city too, but I am sorry, it is no Paris. And not every city has to have hundreds of bars opening until 3am for the drunkards to "have night life". Night life is over rated.
