I'm sure every word above is true, but for me health was and remains the number one motivator and priority. All the other things are bonuses - pretty significant and pretty wonderful ones - but still just bonuses. I think one's age has a lot to do with all that. I resumed exercise at age 61 for health reasons, having become way too sedentary after some years as a competitive cyclist. I am much fitter now at 67 than I was at 61. Older people are more likely to be in it for their health.

Reading comprehension seems to be on the decline. I said that it "started" out about looks, not that I currently do it for looks. Gosh, really?

LOL Really? Ok, I'll bite.

You assume that because we care about our looks we are doing it because it is the "in" thing to be?
The last time that I checked, visbile muscles weren't "preferred body types", either. But I have visible muscles. I could care less what Hollywood and fashion magazines (I mean, really?) find fashionable.

When I say "looks", I mean liking what I see when I look in the mirror.

True. I am almost 35 and have had no major health issues, so it took a while for health to become a priority. Then again, I know some people who are older, unhealthy, and still live an unhealthy lifestyle.

I like cardio. Its the only exercise I can stick too so far. I know lifting weights isn't for me. It doesn't relax me like getting on the elliptical does.

Obese,or rubenesque, women were "in" a century ago.
Then slim was in,then curvy, now fit. Idk why that's hard for you to believe.
With more fashion designers and magazines featuring overweight women,it might turn being overweight as the "in thing.

And by some, i only refer to people that are oh so shocked that being fit isnt everyones top priority, and, mostly, not only LOOK DOWN on fat people, they bash and insult them. Just read this thread (i have read it for the one who asked) and read all over "Excersise and fitness" and "Diet and weight loss" forums and you will see there is bashing all over the place. Its like some people (and i repeat SOME people) LOVE to bash, and whenever an obese person opens a thread asking for help or question, all the fat bashers appear saying all kinds of insults. But i dont even need to repeat this, just go and read for yourself. It is everywhere and it is unbelievable. I already did a long post in another thread i read (dont remember what now, i did it a while ago, but its in my posts historial) when everyone was saying fat people were lazy and disgusting and pigs and...well, you know what i mean.

So i find it weird you say i "look down on people" when im only saying things as they are. This kind of people love to bash fat people to feel better about themselves, cause of course they need this kind of thing cause their universe is so narrow and shallow. Of course you are not like that (thats to ER) if you have a degree in french literature and all, but im talking about this nasty people that love feeling superior to everyone (mostly to "fatties") cause they train. OMG! YOU TRAIN! WHAT AN OUSTANDING HUMAN BEING YOU MUST BE!!!

And Lao, of course you are a perfect example of the people i was refering to. Superficial, dogmatic, and repeating "being fit should be numer 1 priority, yada, yada, yada". You are the kind of person that calls a woman "chick". You and I belong to different worlds and could never understand eachother.

Sorry "bro" (is that how you speak??) we speak different languajes.
Some of my criticism is directed at those who come on the board, ask for help, seemingly ignore it and then expect a "pity party" when they ride the river denial and make up excuses: "Oh it's too hard, oh, I don't like exercise, OH-I might develop muscles and look manly, OH-I might get fit and transform into an arrogant jock and on & on."
I have a tremendous amount of respect for those admitting they are obese AND doing something about it. Very little for those that come on here to share excuses, whine about it and then call us "air-heads or arrogant jocks"! Like others on this board, I was very overweight before I prioritized losing weight, eating healthier and maintaining the discipline to be pretty consistent with keeping the weight off.
Being tolerant of people different from me is important and sometimes requires a conscious decision. BUt to come come on a board like this and broadly criticize all who are fit or working on it to shore up one's insecurities is as bad as the bad behaviors you accuse us "all" of displaying.

I dont think so because it still comes down to what most men like and find attractive. I think most women can be attractive as long as they are not on the extreme end of things (i.e., obese, sickly thin, steriod infused muscular).

Slim, fit, curvy (curvy as in Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara or Salma Hayak) or athletic will always be attractive. Overweight will NEVER be the desired body type.

It has more to do with a rich/poor dichotomy. Because the obesity epidemic is largely affecting the working class more so than the upper classes, being thin is more desirable (and right or wrong, there's the idea that the wealthy can afford the leisure and the money involved in diet and fitness) and being fat is "common." A hundred years ago and even earlier, most poor people were thin and only the wealthy could afford enough food to actually become plump, so at that time a little more heft was stylish.

The point of my post was that people who work out and take care of themselves don't do it because it is the "in" thing to do. I don't follow trends, so I don't know what you mean when you say "in". "In" according to whom?

Aside from magazines geared towards women who lift weights (Oxygen, M&F Hers), I can't think of one mainstream magazine that feature women with muscle tone. Vogue, Marie Clair, etc. all feature skinny women. If they have an overweight woman on the cover, it is not often.

And fashion designers (although I can't think of one who does this often) may use overweight women simply because there are more overweight people in this country than ever before. I actually don't know any fashion designers (I mean high-end fashion) who use overweight women. But, I don't follow them, so it's possible.

At the end of the day, a woman with muscles will take as much flack for that as a woman who is fat. I remember hearing something about Cameron Diaz and Maddona "looking like men" and it showing up in the press.

Please do not bother to argue with these people jerseygal. If they think being a meat head body lifter is attractive then so be it. Remember that this is the exercise forum. it is not about health it is about looks. These people don't realize that you can still have an unattractive face but still be fit. Personally I like my chubby cheeks they make me look cuter and have a friendly face. I also have dimples which brings up the cute factor, since dimples are cute all on their own.

These people will just never understand that you can be overweight and be happy with yourself and make healthy choices. Like I said before I just wish my tummy was a bit flatter. Some people just don't want to be stick thin or a muscle woman. I don't need an exercise junkie who is conceited, horridly skinny models, or Hollywood to tell me that I am beautiful.

So do you think it will suddenly become fashionable to be obese? Magazines are featuring more heavy women for two reasons - 1) to take some heat off them for constantly featuring too-skinny women and 2) to be politically correct as part of the fat acceptance movement.

I do not expect to see in my lifetime a period when obese women are considered attractive. It won't be associated with wealth or status like it was a very long time ago. Obese will always be unhealthy since it is the #1 factor in mortality. Pressure to deal with rising healthcare costs seems unlikely to diminish so the pressure will be on to attain some reasonable level of fitness.

Women don't have to be skinny to be beautiful. But fit women look better both in and out of clothes. They can participate in more activities.
