Building off the recent delightful thread "my mom is so funny" - what does the typical 50-70 year old woman wear that makes her look like an "Old Lady"? In other words, what should we avoid & what should we embrace? I'm talking beyond the obvious things like pull-on polyester pants and tops with adorable scenes or animals on them!
What screams "Frumpy" & "Old Woman Walking" in a loud voice?
-sweaters with those "art patterns" on them
-anoraks
-pilgrim, ruffle collar dresses
-"dressing up" a matching sweatsuit (bottom and top ) outfit with a necklace and earrings in a complementary color
-tops with no waist definition that match a bottom often with those "art patterns"
Ill-fitting clothing (wrong shape, wrong length). Dated shapes (i.e. pleated pants that are baggy in in the butt), shapeless knits, holiday sweaters.
The "old lady shoes" you know the nurse shoes or their cousins, the boxy heeled round toes pump. You can get comfort in a trendier (and still practical) shoe: driving shoes, loafers etc.
Sneakers with unsuitable outfits.
A whole bunch of stuff. Some people get older and abandon all sense of personal style.
I don't mean plain black pants or a sweater. I am talking about those big bold patterned flowy shirts that may or may not look like they've been bedazzled. That screams old lady to me.
- highwaisted, AND
- faded stonewash, AND
- pockets floating high above a flat expanse of butt
- clearly chosen by someone whose denim buying habits were formed before you could choose jeans to flatter any figure
Also wearing ALL basics. Meaning, plain khakis or jeans are fine, a solid color crewneck tee is fine, white Reebok cross trainers could sometimes be fine, but not all at the same time without any accessories, contrast or attention to shape.
Gray hair. So many women I've seen would look soooo much better if they would color their hair. Tight bodies, smooth complexion, nice teeth and smile, ......and gray hair.
What makes me think of an old lady is me going through the grocery line and complaining to the young man checking me out about "I remember when whole chickens used to cost..." The words came out and I thought, "OMG, I am my grandmother."
How about the obvious? I think they call it "Age!"
