When I was in NYC this was never a problem. But when I came down to Atlanta, my sexual orientation came into question solely because of the jewelry that I wear. I think it's a ridiculous accusation to make simply because of...jewelry! My friend down here said men who wear jewelry in the south are typically gay. Is this true? I do notice less men wearing gold necklaces and bracelets, but how does that mean you're gay if you do wear them?
On a normal day, I typically wear a nice gold chain with a crucifix that was given to me by my grandmother. I sometimes wear diamond earrings (not huge gangster ones) on occasion along with a gold watch and bracelet.
People down here have labeled me as a "Guido" just because of the chain and cross I wear. Which makes no sense because I'm not Italian...I'm black.
Are men not seen wearing gold crosses down here because Catholicism isn't dominate? Is it just an old way of thinking?
For the record, I have no problem with gay people. I just don't like being labeled like that since I'm straight.
But how? They're not like huge diamonds, they're just big enough to look smooth but still classy. They're also not big hoops or something ridiculous like that.
Dude, that's what happens in the village. What's acceptable in NYC may not be in the countryside.
Also, GA is one of those states with tons of conservative men who are closet gays or are intimidated by the fact that someone may call them gay if they dress nice.
I think times have changed. It used to be that if a guy had an earring, however small, he was labeled as gay. Now, I see athletes and other movie stars wearing them. I personally don't care for the black disk types of earrings. I do like the small hoops and diamonds. I also think they look better on young guys rather than mature men. Crosses say nothing about your orientation. As far as bracelets, I don't think that says much either, the leather type seems to be seen in many male clothing and accessory catalogues. I don't wear any jewelry except a watch which I just found out that I am nickel sensative ( thanks to friends here at CD). Just ordered a Christmas present to myself of a Tissot titanium watch. :-)
It used to be that only thugs or "guidos" wore jewelry beyond watch and wedding ring. And cufflinks! Now I see straight young men with small earrings but still not much else. I tend to think of NYC as a much flashier place.
Youre in Atlanta and people are calling you gay? Sheesh, thats the most PC part of Georgia. Better not leave the city! Here in Florida no one would give a flying flip if you were wearing jewelry.
