I had to hunt the other day looking for boot cuts. It was almost all skinny jeans. I ended up having to wear Jordache. Those were the only boot cuts they had. I haven't worn Jordache since the 80s. They're cute pants, though. One stone washed and one darker pair.
Chico's also makes a variety of great jeans. I think I have every one of their styles, and that includes a VERY nice moderate boot cut that I bought just this year in a dark denim - I get compliments on these regularly and they feel so stinking good! Orvis also makes a good jean for boots - not really a boot cut but wide enough to wear over boots.
Both of these brands have about 2 percent spandex so don't buy them big, buy them on the small side because they will give over the course of the day. But neither brand gets too loose if you buy them a bit snug to begin with. Don't buy them expecting them to shrink, but then wash them in cold water and if possible let them air dry or dry them on low heat. If you do this, they will last a long time. That's especially good for Chicos because they will set you back about $80 for a pair!
I live in California & people pretty much wear all kinds of jeans out here...except they would stick out like a sore thumb for wearing the "mom jeans" (high-waisted & showing too much stomach). Colored jeans are still great as long as they're not pastel colors.
Regarding the cut, I DO think that dark-colored, boot cut styles are the MOST flattering to most people. I've personally grown to like skinny jeans more often. I used to ONLY wear bootcut.
I'm also a die-hard for the bootcuts. Most people, esp. over 45 or so, that I've seen do not look attractive in truly skinny jeans.
I have realized that some of my bootcuts are wider than I like, though. I recently bought a pair of the Perfect Boot jeans from Gap. They have much less of a flair on them. I used these as a template to modify some of mine that were starting to look reminiscent of bell-bottoms. Directions to fix below, if you sew at all, this is doable. Could have done rather inexpensively at an alterations place, too. I'm thinking of making a pair of the too-big boot ones into straight legs, to see how I like them.
My main problem is I've grown to love the low rise ones and this fall everything seems to be hovering in the mom-jeans zone.
