Mmm! I can only eat half of one like that, though. Makes me too full!

While I do like a gourmet burger on occasion, typically I'll order a burger cooked medium rare, with a plain mild cheese like american or provolone, crisp lettuce, and a little Heinz ketchup and brown mustard. If the tomatoes are ripe, I also like a slice of that - pickle slices too

Ketchup, mustard and onions or lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. I almost never get cheese on it.

There was a trend in chain restaurants not so long ago to come up with " gourmet" toppings on a burger.

Just stop F7cking with the hamburger!!

I love top quality Angus or Kobe beef to make the burger followed by American or cheddar cheese .
I personally love bacon on my burger.
A solid high quality bun is a must.

Toppings can be all or some of the following; lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, pickles, onion, ketchup, mustard.

Your done! Don't add anything , if you do you'll only convolute the taste of the hamburger.

If I eat out and get a burger, I love Applebbe's quesedilla burger. If I order a takeout cheeseburger, its ketchup, onion, pickles, mustard. Or a Big Mac. At home I might go the thousand island onion tomato route half the time.
I love bacon but just don't like it on a burger. And mayo is verboten.
I can make a decent quesedilla style burger at home with a soft taco shell, pepper jack cheese, Taco bell creamy ranchero sauce, onions tomatoes and pico de gallo( if I really want to be complete). But at home its still american cheese, ketchup pickles mustard and onion half the time. You can't beat the classic combo.

For me the mood dictates.

My go to burger- Heinz ketchup, a couple slices of my sweet mother in laws homemade dill pickle- they taste like nothing you can buy and since I found them, they go on Hawaiian sweet roll hamburger buns.

Other options are:

If I can get ahold of a garden fresh tomato I like my burger with good Vermont white cheddar, avocado mayo (just mash avocado & Hellmann's or Best together and squeeze in a touch of lemon juice), organic baby spinach, slivers of raw red or vidalia onion and a thick slab of tomato on a kaiser roll.

A good old fashioned patty melt- on rye with caramelized onions and swiss cheese.

Grilled yellow squash & sliced portabella mushroom, muenster cheese and organic baby spinach with a nice aoili.

Sweet Baby Ray's Hickory Brown Sugar BBQ sauce.

I love love love the quesadilla burger, but for anyone who is curious, I would not recommend looking up the nutrition info. I made the mistake of doing so and now find it very hard to justify eating one.

I will eat almost anything on a hamburger, but I dislike loading one up with several things. So if it has onion strings, keep it simple with some swiss and thousand island. Or sliced avocado with a bit of bacon and pepper jack. Or a fried egg with tomato and butter lettuce. I dislike throwing 6 different toppings on one as it doesn't let the taste of the beef shine through.

I don't think anything will ever beat a simple In N' Out double single (2 patties one cheese) with a whole grilled onion, fresh crispy lettuce, and a juicy tomato, finished with their special sauce. Classic and delicious.

I love bacon cheeseburgers slathered with ketchup, plus a Benadryl chaser because I'm allergic to dairy, nitrites and tomatoes...
