I just love the people who register on City-Data in June of 2014 and post only twice, all to gripe in the hopes of gaining some sort of emotional or financial gain. Good grief.

Total Snip

Why would anyone move there? There's nothing there but some strip malls and houses . Not even beach access.
Huh? According to this site - Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed- CC is ranked 301 out of 442 FL cities, with only 3.68% unemployment. Can you provide some facts with that statement?

Since I'm not exactly sure when the data in the above link was updated, here's a current Federal Reserve graph that is pretty clear in which direction the trend is moving...even OUT of season!

Danet,

My wife, son and I just moved to CC a few weeks ago. I'm originally from Miami (as the screen name implies) but we've just moved back to FL after some time in eastern North Carolina. My impression so far is that the Cape is kind of like Miami with a huge percentage of it's population gone, but still with the infrastructure for the most part intact -restaurants and shopping areas galore (on the Cape and in the surrounding cities).
Scrolling through this thread, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly from other users over this area of SW FL. With that being said, I have to say that after living in a truly culturally, artistic and socioeconomically stagnant place that was living in ENC, it's GREAT to be back to civilization in my home state and I'll take being here with all it's faults than certain other places mentioned.

Default Is the grass truly greener on the other side?

It seems like human nature to think someplace else is better than where you're at, at the moment. And it's all relative, of course.
Take me and my wife and son, for example. We spent years living in an eastern NC town that touts itself for it's charm and history and it's proximity to the ocean (an hour at least). If you were visiting the place, its fair to say you'd probably be charmed as well. But to live there would be an entirely different story. The place was a stereotype of the ol' South. Apart from the small, historic touristy lures is a place that is void of diverse commerce, restaurants, culture and heavily intertwined with an unwanted ghetto (the place is thinly segregated (as in, the next block over) with a severely down trodden black population that dates back from the post civil war/reconstruction era.
So coming back to S FL after years in a truly comatosed place, you can see my appreciation with not just CC where we'll be for a few years, but it's closeness with other large cities such as where my friends and family reside, in my hometown, Miami.

Beachbum, I'm new here (transplant from Louisville, Ky) and I've been here for a month now. Don't dwell on the negative posts here. There are negatives to any community and those folks are the ones that usually feel empowered to "vent". Those that are happy are too busy enjoying themselves to worry about posting so you won't see them.

I have found everyone here to be extremely polite and welcoming.....even down to the fast food service industry. Where I came from....and Kentucky is known for it's hospitality I might say, the teenagers that work the drivethru windows would often just hand you your change or your food and not say hi, boo, kiss my $$$ nothing. At least here they make eye contact, smile and thank you.

I wish this area had a nice boardwalk but if that's my only complaint then it's not half bad. I can just take a short commute to Miami Beach for that and it's big city amenities.

I'm loving it here. It's the best of both worlds. You can have a quiet relaxing time, or take a 1.5 hr drive to a mega city.

I miss a boardwalk too, like one we used on Jones Beach, Long Island. At least there is the fishing pier at the Yacht Club. You may also take a walk on the beach at Bowman's Park. The sand is very flat and it is not crowded. Parking is convenient and not expensive.

I just came across this thread after I posted a thread asking about crime in Fort Myers/Cape Coral. This morning I did look at the crime data for Fort Myers and I did not like what the data showed. The crime index for Fort Myers is 66% above that of the USA on average-- not good. Violent crime data looks horrble (murders, violent assaults, robbery)... okay I just checked Cape Coral-- completely different situation! Crime index of CC is below USA average. Wow. Why is there such a difference between two cities separate by just a little bit of water?!?!?

There is no ghetto in Cape Coral. There are a few areas that are a bit run down with apartments, but nothing like East Fort Myers.
