Tell that to people in Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas. I can't stand cornbread unless it has sugar and I haven't come across too many "southern" people in my lifetime that leave sugar out.
My mom puts a couple tablespoons of sugar in her batter (just a hint of sweetness). Our family loathes that overly sweet, overly tall, Marie Callender-ish "corn cake" crap. Its bread, not dessert.

Exactly. I hate the Marie Callender corn bread like cake substance. Boston Market's isn't so bad though. By sugar I mean enough to give that right amount of sweetness. I have no idea where all of these pound cake references are coming from.

Maybe sweet cornbread is a black thing.
btw after reading your other post I was reminded of how much I've been craving some good Cajun cooking (its practically nonexistent here). I watched this cooking show today where this lady from New Orleans name Ms. Lucy made green beans with eggs. She said it was an old timers cajun dish. It looked so good.
Absolutely right, my good Okie friend! Mmmmmm, mmmm...and add some fresh-black-eyed peas to the mix? With some cornbread "crumbled up" in it? Then you got a sweet bit of the taste of the South!

LOL Like mentioned, it is metaphorical over-kill. Nothing to take literally! Not saying at all that cornbread is not "Southern" if it contains a bit of sugar in it. As some of you say, many Southerners DO make it that way and it tastes great. Just that TOO much sugar makes it into something it isn't.

I've never heard of any southerners eating cornbread with sugar. I live in Georgia, and the same goes for those in the carolinas, Alabama, and Tennessee.
