Grits- Yes, It's even better with shrimp, alligator, or grillades on top. Used to put sugar in them as a child, grew out of that though.

Fried Okra- NO!

Fried Chicken- Not really

Homemade Macaroni and Cheese- My favorite!!!

Iced Tea- Only sweet tea and only when I'm in the mood for it.

Turnip Greens- Only with rice, I guess that's a New Orleans thing.

Cornbread- Only if it has enough sugar in it.

Chicken and Dumplings- Un uh

Red Velvet Cake- Love it. Red Velvet cheesecake is even better.

My mom puts a couple tablespoons of sugar in her batter (just a hint of sweetness). Our family loathes that overly sweet, overly tall, Marie Callender-ish "corn cake" crap. Its bread, not dessert.

Okra = the good Lord's finest food!

As for the sugar in cornbread....in Oklahoma we'll take that sugar out of the cornbread and go ahead and add it to our tea, thank you very much!

Exactly. I hate the Marie Callender corn bread like cake substance. Boston Market's isn't so bad though. By sugar I mean enough to give that right amount of sweetness. I have no idea where all of these pound cake references are coming from.

Maybe sweet cornbread is a black thing.

btw after reading your other post I was reminded of how much I've been craving some good Cajun cooking (its practically nonexistent here). I watched this cooking show today where this lady from New Orleans name Ms. Lucy made green beans with eggs. She said it was an old timers cajun dish. It looked so good.

Absolutely right, my good Okie friend! Mmmmmm, mmmm...and add some fresh-black-eyed peas to the mix? With some cornbread "crumbled up" in it? Then you got a sweet bit of the taste of the South!

LOL Like mentioned, it is metaphorical over-kill. Nothing to take literally! Not saying at all that cornbread is not "Southern" if it contains a bit of sugar in it. As some of you say, many Southerners DO make it that way and it tastes great. Just that TOO much sugar makes it into something it isn't.

I like crowder peas with boiled okra.

I've never heard of any southerners eating cornbread with sugar. I live in Georgia, and the same goes for those in the carolinas, Alabama, and Tennessee.
