I chose to live in El Paso after looking at other southwestern cities.
This city has a negative image being on the border town.
But after visiting here for a while, I was surprized how much I liked it.
First you have to take the city for what it is.
Serene,a hometown, scenic, very safe with excellent weather.
It is not cosmopolitan, fast paced or the best place for jobs.
It is a great place to kick back, relax, and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible! If you have not visited El Paso you would not know what I am talking about.
I agree with your assessment. I was surprised at how much I liked El Paso. I first visited after spending 5 days in Houston, and expected to find a smaller version. Would definitely like to go back some day and explore more.
Louisville is amazing, perfect mix of big-city amenities and small-town charm, with a ton of stuff to do for both residents and visitors. The weather is lovely and the town identity is very strong and unique. Also, the park system is fantastic, better than any other city I've investigated - beautiful state park in the city along with an extensive waterfront park with fantastic views of the city's skyline. Downtown is hopping too, with a safe and exciting feel. My family would move to this place in an instant!
Birmingham, Alabama. Interviewed here without knowing too much about the place. My wife had to be practically forced on the plane, expecting something out of To Kill A Mockingbird or something. We got here and were totally blown away. Utterly different that what we expected. Lots of things to do, GREAT restaurants (some of which would put ANYTHING in Chicago to shame), nice arts community, lovely hilly terrain, friendly people, etc. etc.
....was Boston! I had no idea that a city could be that lively! (grew up in the country and in Detroit...never been to NYC..)
Nonetheless, Boston was a pleasant surprise. We went there on/for New Year's Eve a few years back. Got to see the fireworks light off in the Boston Commons right out our hotel room.
Great, great city. It shows how lacking Detroit is in just about every aspect of city-living.
A city with not the best rep that I enjoyed was Norfolk, VA. I've been to VA Beach and the area many times but I spent a day in Norfolk last summer-I was pleasantly surprised.
