I live in a suburb. On Dec. 1, I had hip surgery. We had a huge snowstorm (~10 inches, IIRC) that day. After being at the hospital all day with me, my husband was very happy to see that our next door neighbor had shoveled out our driveway and sidewalk, no mean feat since he had to do his own as well. Many neighbors brought us food during those first few weeks, offered to give me rides when I couldn't drive, etc. Some came to visit me in the hospital. Most of my city neighbors didn't even know my name, cry_havoc.
That's very nice that they did it and maybe you have lived there for many years, but that is not the norm today.
I thought it was just my part of the country(a sunbelt state that is transient in nature)but a good friend of mine who lives in New England was in a house for about 4 years.
She said no one came over to introduce themselves when they moved in, and even when they moved out a few years later no one came over and said goodbye.
And this was in one of the quaint little NE towns.
People wave and say hello and make chit chat if they happen to be out at the mailbox at the same time, but no real interaction.
I think if you talk to most people you will find that there is little interaction these days.
But how long ago are you talking about? I grew up in the suburbs of NYC and we knew all the neighbors. That was in the 70s.
Times have changed. Most people keep to themselves and don't know their neighbors other than to wave out when they have to...LOL.
Not true, and simply a myth. Today, in 2012, we know all our neighbors and they know us. The same is true for family and friends who live in different suburbs.

This may come as a surprise to you, but the people you know are only small % of the suburban population.
The misery of the suburbs is well known and documented. The downfall and the decline of America is in the suburbs. So yes if you want to see why things suck look at the suburbs and the lifestyle of the lazy, ignorant, and greedy who live there. There some small exceptions but everyone who gets it knows this.
