Atlanta's MSA is massive and includes a lot of rural areas and small towns that have little to no interaction with the city. And my original comment to that post of yours still stands.

as is Forsyth County, which was 20th century America's most racist locale. GOH with the gibberish.
Forsyth County was the 20th century's most racist locale in America? Who can take you seriously when you spew such drivel? Of course there was the incident in 1912, but those were pretty ubiquitous during that time and it was hardly the worst incident to occur during that era. And please don't tell me you're talking about the KKK rally of the 80's where there were actually many more counter-protesters in attendance.
But keep reaching; it's both amusing and sad to see you continue to do so, especially in response to a post that's half a year old.
Mississippi is the most stereotypical of the the old South. The South is impossible to define these days its a very diverse region both culturally and geographically. Most people can't even argue on if Texas, Kentucky, Oklahoma are in the South

I just read someone's description of the South in an old book from the 70's. "South of Virginia, and east of the Mississippi." Thought to myself, I'm sure that'll annoy some folks on CD!
Its already known that its a southern state and ALWAYS WILL BE with its history and southern culture. But to reinforce for some of you who obviously haven't been to the rural parts (aka 75% of the state).
- Birthplace and HQ of THE original southern sport, NASCAR. Look at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, nearly all of em are from NC. Dale Earnhardt for goodness sake! How can you say NC ain't the SOUTH when DALE and THE KING are from there!!! (plus Dale Jr., Lee Petty, the Jarrett's so on and so forth).
- Accent - the Carolina draw and the use of words like " over yonder", and the phrase "ahh law". Mom and Dad = Momma and Dedddyyy. Just a couple examples of Carolina dialect. The thickest NC accent is just as distinct than anything out of Mississippi or Alabama.
- Food! - cornbread, cole-slaw, chitlins, okra, chicken pot pie, flounder, Texas Pete, the sweetest sweet tea, CHEERWINE and BBQ. Lexington BBQ is the best in the world! All major staples of NC diets (at least, for those of us from here).
- Tobacco! - One of the largest producers. It is a staple of the south. See Tobacco Road and RJ Reynolds. Shoot, agriculture in general. Carolinian's are cut from farmers. Tractors, till, bushhogs, shucking corn before school! etc.
- Appalachia - don't really need to explain. Moonshine still alive in NC!
- Country music - Charlie Daniels, Eric Church, Randy Travis, Scotty McCreery, etc. Carolina this, Carolina that (btw, they ain't talkin about South Carolina! lol). Side note: The popular southern song, "Wagon Wheel", is about getting to Raleigh!
- Religion: Baptist. If you are like me, when you go to church, most of the members are your relatives.
- History (some unfortunate): Confederacy, Politics, Slavery, KKK, etc. Blood relations to most of the other southern states. A lot of my family are from Cherokee Falls/Gaffney, SC. We arent any less southern just because our family lives a couple hours away in SC!
Just a few reasons...Yea Raleigh and the Triangle might be getting overrun a bit, but that's just a fraction of the state. We have some of the best education (Duke, Carolina, State, WF, Davidson, etc.) in the world. Of course over time non-southerners will come. But that don't change the fact that NC will always be one of the most southern states.
You could do this with any Southern State though. Take my home state of Virgnia
NASCAR: We've go two NASCAR tracks and the origins of NASCAR were Moonshine runners taking hooch from the mountains of Southwest Virginia into North Carolina
Accent: The Virgina Piedmont accent is regarded as the orginial aristocratic Southern accent. Furhter, the mountain twang of SWVA is thicker than anything you'd find in Mississippi. It's damn near unintelligble...even to me and I'm from there!
Food: Brunswick Stew and Country Ham (Smithfield Hams) are staple foods of Virginia past and present. Further...the VERY FIRST published Sweet Tea recipe has it's origins in, you guessed it, Virginia. The orginial recipe was printed in an old book called "Housekeeping in Old Virginia." You've got me on Cheerwine....That is the NECTAR OF THE GODS!
Tobacco: Phillip Morris...the parent of freaking Marlboro is based in Virginia. VA and NC respectfully have two of the longest history with organized tobacco harvesting in the country.
Appalachia: C'mon now. The show Moonshiners two main characters (tim and tickle) are in southwest Virginia making the moonshine! Further...ever seen the movie Lawless? It's about "Them Bondurant Boys" and the wettest country during prohibition...Franklin County Virginia. Moonshine runs deep in those hills.
Country Music: June Carter Cash, Old Crow Medicine Show (Harrisburg, VA), and the Bristol recordings. The very first recorded country music was laid down in BRISTOL, VA. Also....RALPH BY GOD STANLEY. Bluegrass king.
Religion: Baptist is by and large the most common outside of Northern VA. We've even got the Baptist Harvard, Liberty University. On top of that ...Virginia is one of the few states to actually have two seperate segments of the SBC.
History: Again...some unfortunate. We were the captial of the confederacy. The home to Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and a host of other prominent confederate generals.
VA...like NC...has recently had a good deal of migration from elsewhere because our economy is so strong. On top of that...we've got phenominal schools as well (UVA, W&M, Univ of Richmond, Washington and Lee). Non southerners will continue to come to VA but they'll never change the history of the state.

Even though it bordered Fulton County, in 1987, Forsyth County was 0% black over the previous 75 years. As of 2010 it was 0.7% black. Sorry to break the news that Forsyth County has the strongest case as the preeminent " Sundown Town " of the 20th century. Even though popular notion is that Mississippi and Alabama are the two most Southern states, it was Georgia that led all states in lynchings during the 20th century under everybody's nose. No other Southern state had a Klan Klavern in each and every one of it's counties in 1949 but there was a Klan Klavern in all of Georgia's 159 counties in 1949....but Georgia isn't that Southern

Anybody arguing that Georgia isn't that Southern is ignorant of history. However, Atlanta being the major transplant destination that it is, with all of the cultural influences that come with that, skews things just a tad for Georgia in terms of perception.
