People bring up the fact that previous waves of immigrants: the British, the Germans, the Irish, and the Polish, all eventually assimilated. However there's a difference between then and now: We now have immigration laws.
They can't assimilate if they're illegal. And having a mass of illegal immigrants from one ethnic group makes the legal ones think that they don't have to bother assimilating either. Therefore we have to get rid of the illegals if we want Latino immigrants to assimilate.

You seem to think that all Latin Americans have a unified mind and that legal Latinos see themselves as not needing to assimilate. The fact that they have their own cultural traditions (as the Italians and the Polish do) doesn't take away the fact that many ARE assimilating into the mainstream. By mainstream I mean speaking English regularly and enjoying American cultural activities. Don't think that Latinos are all stuck in Latin America with their mindset. The graphs eschaton posted are a good indicator they are NOT.
