Going back to the analogy that Oklahoma is to Texas what Canada is to the U.S., Stillwater might be like Alberta. Alberta has a distinctly American character to it because during its early settlement nearly 200,000 Americans flooded the province, including Mormons. Alberta, historically NOT American, but encroached on by Americans through the decades.

We had a pretty mixed group around the table the other night - ages 17-80, OK/AL/GA, HS/PhD/college. Enough said:>)

Who gives a hoot about Alberta? What is it with you and Mormons? Have you been to Stillwater? And I mean not just drive through and grab a burger.

If link works, this talk from a man on the road commenting on a recent winter storm can give you an idea of what the north central Oklahoma accent is like: https://www.facebook.com/StwSema/vid...9017102830615/

Another feature in which Oklahoma is distinctly different from Southern states. In Southern states you will find rural towns and locations with a large African-American presence. This is not true in the North or the Midwest. It is not true in Oklahoma either. The demographics and society don’t resemble the South.

Rural KY is heavily white, that doesn't mean it's not the South

Only on City-Data, do I see people trying to push that Oklahoma is somehow “southern” lol. I’ve been in Oklahoma as recently as last week and travel through the state multiple times a year (I have family in Dallas, TX)..

The only thing “southern” about Oklahoma is geographically, it’s located in the southern plains. Oklahoma is NOT “southern”.

That's funny, I only see its Southerness so contested on here.

Clever response. But I’d suggest you do a deeper dive, lol.

Anyone who has spend any significant time in what is considered “the south” or “Deep South” if you must (and I have) knows that Oklahoma is not “southern”. Other than its southern location within the plains region. I might concede that perhaps OKLA has a few “southern” influences..but it still has more in common with Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and even Iowa..than it does with Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi or Louisiana for example. This is my opinion of course, derived from spending much time in all of these parts of the US.

Peace.

From another place on the net that did a survey:

Quote:
Fifty-one percent of readers thought Oklahoma wasn't Southern; it was shy about 514 votes to cross over. The Sooner State fared worse in our previous region survey, in which 82 percent of voters said it wasn't part of the Midwest. Poor Oklahoma, neither Midwestern nor Southern.
You can find the "Is Oklahoma Southern" arguments all over the net.

Even on the Oklahoma forum here there have been gargantuan arguments about this among the people who actually live or grew up in Oklahoma. We have done a lot to perplex each other on this topic.

As they like to say. "The science isn't settled".
