Those of you who are familiar with Denver will understand what I mean. Denver I think is a great town, and I don't think it's just another average American city as some have suggested. However, it is by no means among the Wests most beautifully situated citys. It is for the most part a plains city located at a distance from the mountains, much the same as Calgary. The topography of the metro itself is not nearly as interesting as Seattle, San Fran., Salt Lake City, Los Angeles or many of the major Western cities. There are some towns within the greater metro, such as Golden, which are closer to the mountains, but again it is primarily a plains city. To be sure the mountains to the west are very beautiful, once you get into their interior, as is all of Western Colorado. Denver's immediate topography resembles Kansas and Nebraska more than a Salt Lake, Seattle or Los Angeles.
I agree. I love Denver and would gladly live there but the setting of the city is on the plains with the mountains off some distance to the west, not hovering over the city like other places in the west. There are some incredibly beautiful areas nearby.
Best over-all appearance: Boston
Most beautiful lake scenery: Salt Lake City (would have went with Tahoe, but it's unfortunately not a city)
Most beautiful costal scenery: San Diego
Most beautiful mountain city: Asheville, NC
Most beautiful architecture: Charleston, SC
At first thought, hard to argue with this. Will be back.
The section of Lake shore drive above the Mag Mile in Chicago is very beautiful with the lake on one side and the Near North Side Skyline in front of you with the John Hancock Center jutting out. The Lakefront of Chicago and the downtown riverwalk are some of the best in the world(at least among major cities).
I’ve also always loved Boston harbor. Just all of the urban peninsulas sprawling out into it and then the numerous islands.
Discounting my own town and among cities I have been to (in no particular order):
New Orleans, LA
Savannah, GA
Charleston, SC
Wilmington, NC
Asheville, NC
St. Augustine, FL
Winter Park, FL
Charlottesville, VA
Lexington, VA
Staunton, VA
Williamsburg, VA
Alexandria, VA
Frederick, MD
Harpers Ferry, WV
Washington DC
Boston, MA
The old town areas of Philadelphia, PA
Pittsburgh, PA gets my vote for most beautiful/dramatic entry
Chicago, IL
Milwaukee's lakefront is very nice
Cincinnati, OH (mainly OTR, Mount Adams, and Pendleton)
Fort Collins, CO
Telluride, CO
Boulder, CO
Pasadena, CA
Santa Monica, CA
San Francisco, CA
Heard good things and plan to visit eventually:
Portsmouth, NH
Portland, ME
Newport, RI
Annapolis, MD
Santa Fe, NM
Taos, NM
Park City, UT
Astoria, OR
Bellingham, WA
Santa Barbara, CA
Madison, WI
Traverse City, MI
