LA will be crammed with illegals in the near future, nothing more, nothing less. no room to expand either, it's completely trapped by mountains. Chicago is trapped by what? suburbs? Please, Mayor Daley will build over those as if they were projects. It wouldn't surprise me if Chicago sucks up Evanston maybe one day.
And Houston has no chance of surpassing Chicago... ever. Not at this rate.
Houston has 2.1 mil in 580 sq. miles = 3620 ppsm
Chicago has 2.9 mil in 227 sq. miles = 12,775 ppsm
Can Houston increase it's overall density by 1380 people per square mile?
Not to mention Chicago's already bigger by nearly a million people and shows no signs of stopping. Now Houston might be growing too, but so is Chicago.
Houston is at over 2.2 million (so your density numbers are definitely wrong) and Chicago (at actually 2.8 million) is barely growing. Houston is growing fast. Also, there is a lot of empty space in Houston's city limits. Therefore, once more space is filled up, density overall will increase.

580 sq. and 227 sq......You do the math....I though we were talking about population, not density.
I dunno, Chicago was growing pretty fast last time I checked. Chicago's population is also at 2,873,790 as of 2006 that's more 2.9 than 2.8 to me. And I can guarantee it's definately grown ALOT since then. We'll have to see the 2010 count to really be able to really determine anything. But I can assure at the rate I've seen the city growing, it's only getting bigger, and I mean wayyyy bigger, even since last year, or even six months ago.

The rate you've seen it with your own eyes, or actual Census estimates?

Actual census estimates were last taken in 2006 for Chicago, so I can't say. But since then I can guarantee u it's grown alot more just from the density of areas alone, new filled condo buildings, and filled in sprawl all over.
And yes density is important, unless the city is going to annex more land to expand its sprawl.
Not sure about that, since the 2010 estimates is what Houston is at now actually. Harris County is also above 4 million already, when the 2010 predictions from the site you linked has it at 3.9 million in 2010.
Thats what I was thinking......the 2006 figures had Houston at 2,208,000. I bet we are closer to 2.3-2.5 million now, and we still have two years to go until the next census.
In all honesty, I bet Houston hits 3 million before Chicago does again. It'll be exciting to see how it all turns out in 2010. By then there will be NEW projection numbers for future figures. Who knows what those will be.
