The money you spend at Wal-Marts has a much lower local economic return value than at many other shopping outlets. That's mainly because of limiting vendors profit margins (through strong arm techniques as mentioned above) and outsourcing.

I have no room to talk though, as I shop at Sam’s because they have VERY good steaks!
This is they way I look at it...

If Sam Walton found a way to turn a buck....millions of them by the way, more power to him. That's the American dream. He found it.
If a vendor doesn't want to do business with them, they don't have to.
I work for a local government that deals with a number of children's programs...Walmart is ALWAYS the 1st to donate either giftcards or prizes to these programs. No little $10.00 ones either.
WalMart also was a leading factor in the $4.00 prescriptions.
If we're all totally honest, most of the items in the stores are grossly over-priced in the first place so Walmart getting them at a reduced price enables the consumer to get them at a reduced price. Which puts more money back in my pocket which puts more money in the local economy.

Ah, yeah I looked them up. Not far, but you need a car to get there, and traffic out to the Meadowlands is not kind most days. I spent an hour trying to get to a furniture store in Secaucus on a Sunday a few weeks ago.

I get by OK without Wal-Mart, though. There's a Target near the light rail line, and a BJ's club. Two blocks from my apartment is a C.H. Martin Store. It's like Wal-Mart meets Dollar Tree in the ghetto.

None in the city, but there are 4 in the county and 8 in the metro area. I believe 5 are Super Centers.
