Ugly cities you would never want to live in... (low crime, safer)

- Phoenix
- Las Vegas
- Orlando
- Jackson hole, WY (but incredible scenery)

The crime rates in the West are generally quite a lot lower than most parts of the East & the South. I can't stand when people simplify things like that, making such sweeping statements that one place is too dangerous or that place is more settled, etc, etc.
Back to the original question,
- I won't live anywhere in the Moutains & Great Plains except Denver area
- I won't live anywhere in the South except Atlanta area & Dallas area
- I won't live anywhere in the desert Southwest except Las Vegas (and only in the Winter)
- although I love visiting Hawaii, Alaska & the Northeast, for various reasons I won't live in those areas or can imagine myself living there, except in maybe the furthest outskirts of New York City. Can't say anything about DC/ Virginia as I haven't visited those quite highly regarded places myself
* I very much like where I live now (Seattle) & did enjoy where I have lived (Chicago & LA) in the past.

1. Louisville, Kentucky
2. Birmingham, Alabama
3. Jackson, Mississippi
4. Dallas
5. Phoenix
6. Los Angeles
7. Sacramento
8. Miami
9. Orlando
10. Jacksonville

I agree. I spent some time in Saint Louis a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I found the city to be clean, active, and with a lot of really cool urban neighborhoods. I'd pick Saint Louis over other river towns like Louisville or New Orleans any day.

thanks, glad you agree.... gotta ask, what did you not like about Louisville? I lived there in the '80's, and while parts of it were awful, I liked quite a bit of it.....

Louisville has some nice neighborhoods. But for a big city, I thought it was pretty dull. A small college town offers nearly as much nightlife as Louisville. And compared to its peer cities like Nashville and Indianapolis, Louisville is rather run-down.
