Where you choose to reside is dependent on a good many factors.
With children, schools must be considered. If still employed, job availability enters into the equation. Once retired, however, peaceful tranquility becomes ones focus, and Georgias small communities cannot be beat ! Our little town of 155 people is a dream come true for us.
Where else could we walk freely, day or night and be greeted by friendly, yet un-interfering neighbors. Medical and shopping facilities are within a 30 minute drive,we need never lock our doors,as crime is unheard of !
Just as ones needs change as we age, so also do our priorities, and the peace and quiet of small communities is just what the doctor ordered for us aging retirees !
Georgia has lots of tiny towns, within "spittin" distance of metropolitan areas, which offer low taxes, inexpensive homes, and the peace we all ultimately seek, so my suggestion would be just travel the state till you find your utopia !

First, GA is the largest state (land area) east of the Mississippi River but it contains over 150 counties and some are a whole lot smaller than CT.

Second, odors! GA has big paper mills; those near Augusta, Brunswick and Rome have been powerful producers of odor in the past and probably still do.

Finally, it sounds like you are looking for a small town and safe. Check out the villages in Oconee County outside Athens. Small, safe and the schools are good (for a state that ranks where GA does in education). If anyone is going to live in GA, the Athens area has a lot to recommend itself. Starting with the University of GA.

Beware: air quality in GA is not good in the summer. Check out AIRNow - Local Forecasts & Conditions on any given day to find out what the rating is for that day. Also, water is an issue. Except for the two years that hurricanes clobbered Florida in 2004 and 2005, GA has been hit by drought and hot summers. The heat cooks the emmissions from the smog factory in/around Atlanta and yields some bad air for sensitive groups who suffer respiratory ailments.

So here goes: Best: Athens, Statesboro, St. Simons, Blairsville and Hiawassee.

Worst: Cobb County, Gwinnett County, Atlanta, pick two.

Default Most don't agree

Based on the population patterns in Georgia... most people don't seem to agree with your picks for worst places to live in Georgia... By far and away the vast majority of new people moving to Georgia choose to live in metro Atlanta. If all of these other cities are such great places to live then why aren't more ppl choosing to live there? I will agree on Athens though... outside of metro Atlanta,it's the best city to live in Georgia.

I am originally from NYC, now living in South florida for the past 6 years, but am seriously considering moving to North Georgia to Dawsonville. I already brought my vacation home there, but now thinking of moving full time if I'm able to land a good job.
I am single and all my friends and family are in south florida, so it's a very difficult decision doing it alone....
I have visited a few times this past year since I owned my home and still can't make a decision. I LOVEEEEEEEEE my house as it's huge and something I would have never been able to afford in NYC or South Florida. I have an amazing view of the mountains, but I'm still close to 400 and the all the shopping and many restaurants.
The people also seem nicer and in my community, there are all sorts of people, many from florida and some from the northeast...
I am very much a yankee though and have that personality, but I am outgoing and friendly, I'm just a bit worried about the culture shock. If anyone can tell me more about Dawsonville to relieve this apprehension I have about not fitting it...I"d appreciate it...

Columbus (muscogee county) and cumming(forsyth county) are two of the best cities to live in they both have really good schools columbus having the #1 high school in ga (Columbus High). As far as Cumming it has a small town feel and the mountains are so close you feel like you can reach out and touch them.
