To everyone saying NC is going to pass GA...(inferior complex). I think the poster is referring to the fact that GA is the largest in land area espconsidering FL is the largest based on what the NC boosters are relating the posting to. (population etc)

-Good grief!

When I was a kid, I thought I was the only geek in Georgia who asked for a Rand McNally Atlas for Christmas and would sit up all night with a calculator crunching city and county population numbers, making lists, predicting future growth.

SO GLAD TO KNOW I WAS WRONG!

Athens is larger because it's consolidated. If Macon consolidates then it would be around 35,000 people larger. That's why he's saying that. If Macon-Bibb County consolidated then it would get its fifth largest city title back.

Macon consolidated is gonna be at about 150, 000 pop wise. Running for the 4th spot.

That is about right. The 2011 Census estimate for Bibb County is 156,433.

Found this interesting. Looks like Columbus and Savannah lead the way with population growth. Since this data is over a year old, I would imagine Columbus has surpassed Augusta in city population. Curious to see where Columbus is now since BRAC is finally finishing up. This only provides Columbus city and not Muscogee County even though it is consolidated. Don't understand that. This is from the Atlanta Business Chronicle today.

I hope 2015 and especially 2020 can hurry up because the same issue is brought up every single day... By then everybody will able to see the growth trends instead of these constant estimates.. The title of 'second largest city' is definitely more important to the locals of Columbus compared to Augusta... Columbus(city) and Muscogee county both have the exact same population...

The same source(Business Journals) has the April 1, 2012 of Muscogee county at 191k, and Richmond County at 203k.. 191k wouldn't be enough to overtake Augusta in terms of city population, and nowhere close to passing Richmond County...
