You can marry who every you want... as long as you are in a committed loving relationship...If you find the family dog attractive - no one has the right to deny you a wedding.... or bake you a cake with a little statue of Rover and you holding hands...I mean paws...what ever....Seriously with the mindless pandering trend to ultimate freedom that the liberal progressives have championed....it is only a matter of time where anything goes......What bothers me is if an older single woman lives with her aged mother...they are not entitled to any benefits that a married couple are entitled too....Unless of course you can convince the state you are having sex with dear old mom...It seems that genital contact is the sole criteria needed for odd match ups condoned by the state.

The dog cannot consent. It has no rights.

Gay marriage isn't going to lead to 'dog marriage' any more than women's suffrage was ever going to lead to 'dog voting' (or, as one of my more idiotic coworkers says - "Oh, yeah? Well maybe it just hasn't led to dog voting... YET!" )

Sadly I've heard this ridiculous argument before. Gay marriage won't lead to any bizarre marriage combinations. People have already tried to marry chairs and things under "straight" marriage. It's not like being gay suddenly increases eccentric behavior.

Allowing humans to marry each other doesn't automatically open the door for anything else.

Dr. Peter Venkman: This country is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
President: What do you mean, "biblical"?
Dr Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. President, real wrath of God type stuff.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.
Dr Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats marrying together... mass hysteria!
President: All right, all right! I get the point!
Immediately came to mind.

Marriage has also always been about humans marrying humans. And it still is.

Although it seems gross, primarily because it is abnormal throughout our society.
The Hum guy character could be on to something..
We're snatching equality from even those we deem odd/creepy.

No, as an animal and a minor cannot sign a legally binding contract. And a family member, especially blood relative, already has most, if not all, of the rights that a married person gets by virtue of that contract (things like visitation rights, making informed choices for medical reasons, etc).

You think a goat is really going to sign for you while you are on medical life support? Or a chair?

There is no slippery slope and opening up to any consenting adults entering into a marriage contract does NOT open it up to non adults, non humans and non sentient items. We will cross the space alien bridge when we get to it...

Mostly due to those close to 1900 individual rights assigned to married couples by law, by virtue of signing that mariage contract. Like visitation rights, the right of decision making for a spouse in signing other contracts or for medical decisions in the case of injury or illness, and estate legalities. What part of this stuff flies over your head?

You sound like one of those people that thought blacks should only marry other blacks and that they should have separate services and rights...

Times have changed...in the last couple of decades less people take the legal plunge and formally marry. This is not just a passing trend the decline the institution is here to stay. As we all know divorce is high...disposing of a spouse is like tossing out an old pair of shoes. The addition to the chaos of what was once marriage - of same sex marriage has also continued to deplete the credibility of arrangement. No one in their right mind can fully take marriage seriously now that same sex marriage is here to stay...Marriage now means nothing. As for same sex couples it seems they just want to copy what heteros have done for a few thousand years. They want their unions to be accepted as the norm...They are a little late..now that gays and lesbians are on the marriage band wagon....they fail to realize that it really does not exist anymore. It's kind of like being a backward person and adopting a fashioned that has fallen out of favor. They can have the institution...no one else wants it.
