Guess we will see when construction begins on the 9 story tower overlooking First National Bank Field. The Triad Business Journal had reported that construction will begin immediately after baseball season ends with a completion date of fall 2018. Baseball season ended last week.
"Mayor Nancy Vaughan said at the time that the city was involved in "preliminary chatter" about whether to make an offer.
She said said she has talked to other city leaders and Zack Matheny, the president of Downtown Greensboro Inc., about what new development might go on the property and how the city might pay for it.
"We can't let this opportunity pass us by," Vaughan said a day after the News & Record announced it was moving its printing operation.
Vaughan said the property could be "transformative" for downtown if the city partners with a developer to create a high-rise office building, a shopping complex or some other type of development."
That's some good news. Too bad their home game is on Thursday rather than during the weekend. I know Kannapolis is only about an hour drive from Greensboro.... but Kannapolis might be the most boring atmosphere I've ever been to in baseball. Maybe the Hoppers can get to the Championship round.
Haha just realized the Hoppers are indeed in the playoffs
This is what developer Marty Kotis envisions for the News and Record property and it appears city leaders may be creating a mold for such a development. The first anchor for downtown was the ballpark. The second anchor will be the performing arts center. Could a third anchor be a convention center? The property is strategically located across the street from the future Westin Hotel and parking deck btw. 25 years ago downtown would have been the wrong location for a convention center but with all of the restaurants, bars, shops, entertainment, new hotels, parks and cultural attractions today, the time for a downtown convention center has arrived. Yes Greensboro already has the Koury Convention Center at I-40 and Gate City Blvd but I believe the city can support two convention centers given the city's location and Interstate highway system.
"Kotis said the newspaper site and the 3.53 acres adjacent to the property on Church Street, which is owned by Commonwealth Building Co., a part of the newspaper's former owner, "could accommodate mixed-use office, retail, hotel, convention center and residential uses to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars of new investment in the city.â€
I hate to say it but what veteran developer Marty Kotis is talking about is the exact plan for the "visionary" Greensboro Triumph Center.
"The News & Record site is likely to be the most significant single property redevelopment project to occur in downtown Greensboro or frankly the entire Triad," local developer Marty Kotis said."
Marty Kotis talks as if there is a plan already in place. Btw Developer Roy Carroll inquired about the property.
Im thinking any kind of development for the News and Record property should come online by 2023 to 2025. It will take a few years for a developer to purchase the property and come up with a master plan for what ever the project is and another 3 to 5 years to build it depending on the scope and scale of the development and whether or not its built in phases. The Business Journal is reporting there is early interest in the property and we know Roy Carroll has inquired about it. I would actually prefer Roy Carroll purchasing the property. He has done some great things for downtown and you know what he builds is going to be a first class development.
