BI-LO is definitely the wrong place. I work a half mile away and would never shop at a BI-LO. I would imagine a lot of the nearby residents are well off and also would never shop at BI-LO. BI-LO is the bottom of the barrel as far as grocery stores are concerned. So gross and depressing inside. I moved here from Orlando 10 years ago and Winn Dixie was the same there, I went inside a couple of them once and never went back. It's like Walmart vs Target only even more pronounced.
I don't agree with this at all. I've shopped at that Bi-Lo many times, never had any problems. I didn't find it gross or depressing. It's a shame people around it couldn't support it.

I don't think that particular location is gross and depressing either (it's actually one of the newer stores under previous ownership) but it is starting to show some age and the product selection, bakery freshness etc is just not what a store like Publix would offer an upscale area.
That store is in a tough spot competition wise and I think if I lived at Verdae I would probably just take most of my grocery dollars around the corner to Costco and Target or the short drive to Publix at McAllister or Publix at Pelham/ E North.
The Upstate Business Journal article is a good read.
I have mixed feelings of a grocery store not coming to Haywood Road anytime soon. Haywood Road is not a good location for a grocery store as Verdae would be a better location. A grocery store is needed in the trade area as the closing of BI-LO #5704, Verdae Village, 101 Verdae Boulevard Suite 1200, Greenville, South Carolina 29607-3823, creates a grocery desert.
A grocery desert usually refers to a poor area without a nearby supermarket where people don't have transportation to get to another supermarket. I don't think think the Verdae area fits that description.

I work 1/2 mile from that BI-LO and have been there quite a few times, and it's not any worse than any other BI-LO, the problem is the entire BI-LO brand is bad. The people that work there always look like they hate it (just like walmart), the stores in general look older/dirtier (even if they aren't actually older/dirtier) than better brands like Publix, etc.
i doubt that Bi-Lo looks dirty on inside, it is a fairly new store or newly renovated. the one in Simpsonville on Fairview is quite nice. i personally think many Walmarts, like the one in Thornblade area, looks nicer on inside than Target.
The Belk store at the mall looks hideous on the exterior IMO. It no longer matches the rest of the mall. They should have left the neutral brick and just built new entrances with stacked stone accents to tie into the rest of the mall entrances. Can't believe Simon approved that.

You would be speaking of a food desert. A grocery desert has food available with restaurants and convenience stores, but it lacks a grocery store.
