I just noticed on my Liquid Highway receipt that I was charged the regular tax, PLUS a "city tax" of about 2%.
I never noticed any city tax before... what's that about?

I've never lived in a city that doesn't have it's own sales tax. Some businesses may just not denote it as clearly on the receipt? Cities generally provide a higher level of services than rural areas, therefore necessitating more revenue.
On a side note, Coffee Underground has much better coffee than Liquid Highway, IMHO (plus that name - I do not want anything that goes through my digestive system to be associated with a "highway" or "liquid" - what's the hurry? - my system is more of a scenic route, thank you).
LOL, I've never liked that name either. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I haven't been a regular customer.
That small tax is likely the hospitality tax used to build, maintain, and enhance the city's public amenities. Considering the fact that more people living outside the city actually enjoy the parks and trails (and more) without paying annual taxes for them, this small percentage added to food and drink is understandable.

LOL - Yes, but there is a Liquid Highway less than a half of a mile from where I live
They don't... in the usual sense. After salaries, expenses, etc., all profits really are donated to a varity of charities. The company was founded for this purpose. There was a feature in last week's Greenville News.
Yes, "all" profits which are after expenses and capital investments.
