Good shampoo and conditioner will do a lot for you.
Also, if you're going to the barber shop for a trim, try a salon instead.
I have curly hair and it helps a lot if I use a flat iron on it before I go for a trim. They don't have to wet it down as much and it's less likely to end up shorter than I want.
The first and most important thing to remember is that you should only go to a men's barber. Not a stylist or a place at the mall. Barbers are specifically trained to cut men's hair. They will be more adept at doing what you need to have done! You will need to be patient. You should begin with getting trims every 4 - 6 weeks until your hair begins to grow. The sides will grow more rapidly than the rest so it will be important to get regular trims till the rest begins to catch up. Then you barber will be able to tell you how often you should continue with the maintenance cuts till you reach your desired length. I went from a zero fade to near shoulder length in 2 years following this method.
