a little coconut oil seems to be the idea; too much and then it's hard to get it out except with repeated (and cold) water.
mention of "remedies" reminds me of two teenage girls who complained to a magazine about a "honey treatment"--"we couldn't find honey so we used a package of brown sugar; it didn't work!" ...<LOL>

Sorry you got so much oil on your head, OP. It reminds me of the time I read in Seventeen magazine that mayonnaise was good for your hair.

My mom didnt get as mad about that as she did when I cracked an egg on my head in a steaming hot shower. Getting scrambled eggs out of the tub is easier than getting them out of your hair.

Oh gosh! That tickled me. LOL

OMG, if my parents hadn't been Vegans; that would have been me! I did all those home remedies & concoctions too:

Lemon Juice for highlights (did nothing), hot oil with vegetable oil (greasy for a week), hot oil with olive oil (smelled like a salad) & coffee grounds for lowlights (coffee grounds in hair for 3 days, smelled like the kitchen trash & didn't work).

The worst wasn't a home remedy but that Sun-In spray stuff for highlights ... turned my hair orange! My mom carted me around to the salons who all told her; "Nope; we would have to use chemicals!" so I was stuck with it.

I use coconut oil as a deep conditioner at least once a week in the winter months. I sometimes have to shampoo twice, but I've never had a problem getting it out. I usually do an initial rinse with some apple cider vinegar and warm water, shampoo and then lightly condition. The vinegar helps clean it first. And not, I don't walk around smelling like salad I shampoo after so the smell is gone.

A couple of years ago I made a real mess in the shower. My flat iron got super heated just before it died while I was using it. It burned a small section of my hair that's right in front. I pulled out every home remedy I could find. I ended up mixing a smashed, very ripe, avocado with an egg. I figured each was good alone so why not both at the same time. Kind of a mistake. No scrambled eggs, but lots of avocado in the shower and took a couple of shampoos to get it all out. The combination did help the burned hairs a bit and the rest of my hair was super soft.
