My girlfriend and I are moving to Hawaii, probably Maui, in August. We have been researching the move for over a year and think have a pretty good sense of how difficult it could be, but we are still willing to take that chance. Life is too short.

We both have good, solid professional experience in several fields and realize that finding our way in Hawaii might mean pursuing several professional avenues until we find what clicks and allows us to actually make a little money to live.

At first, we want to at least try the jobs we want to do. For my girlfriend that would mean working as a personal/private chef, which might even include nanny and house management duties.

I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this? Are some islands better-suited for this profession?

Any info and opinions would be appreciated, even if it's bad news

Thanks!

The problem here in Hawaii is that good job opportunites have always been scarce, especially on the outer islands. For that reason every conceivable money making opportunity and scheme has been tried and continues to be tried. You can make some extra money on the side but you can not survive without a real job.

Thumbs up Hmmm..

Well, actually, you can survive 'without a real job', whatever that means.
There are continual ads from visitors and perm residents alike looking for
someone to 'take care of them'. Advertise your skills wisely and you should
be able to develope a clientele, private chefs don't need many...neither do private florists or private hair stylists etc...get my drift. Yes, all angles have been tried and folks are still looking for reliable and stable caretakers.
You should be able to do quite well, but like I suggested, do it wisely, not cutesy. Folks w/money to burn will hunt you out.
Best of luck to you.

Koale,

Thanks for the info and the helpful perspective. It puts my mind at ease a little because the way you described going about things is exactly the way we were thinking. I have a background in design and marketing so I hope that will help us grow her business. Perhaps we could even join forces with other people working in the same field.

Thanks for wishing us luck

real job = A regular activity performed in exchange for payment, especially as one's trade, occupation, or profession.
