The earthquake was a 4.5, centered 30 miles SE of Hilo, according to the US Geological Survey. Apparently related to the Kilauea eruption, not to the Tsunami.

How wide is it???
Think of what happens when you throw a rock in a pond... the circular wave spreads out in all directions. Same with a tsunami, traveling at 500 mph.

It is now expected to hit the island of Kauai first, about 3:07am, because the tsunami is advancing from the west and will likely take 20 to 30 minutes to cross the entire state.

Hawaii orders evacuations in tsunami threat | Reuters

Quote:
Ocean waves up to 6 feet above normal sea level were detected by deep-ocean gauges near Wake island, Midway and Guam in the North Pacific, said Chip McCreary, a spokesman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The island of Kauai is expected to be first hit because the tsunami was advancing from the west and would likely take 20 to 30 minutes to cross the entire state, McCreary said.

Default Its like the movies?

Aloha,
Im on vacations with my wife and baby, and we are a little worry about the tsunami alert like everybody I guess.

We are close to the beach, around 600 ft, but we are 150-200 ft up from the sea level.

Is this danger? the water can come here in big waves like the movies or is just like when the sea is up from normal level?

thanks,
Morris

If they are evacuating around you, get to the highest point you can. Watch for the sea to go away from the shore and about 15 minutes later the waves will hit.

Might want to double check, but my understanding is that the wave measured a little over 1.5 feet as it passed Wake Island. Sooo, I don't think you need to worry, but that's just me.. I do live about 200 yards from the beach, South Maui, and I'm not leaving..... But I did just scrub the tile floor...... damn..............

Aloha and aole kaumaha, no worrys,,,
