I'm in northern Japan now. Tons of aftershocks that just keep coming and coming.
Been a long day, for sure! I'm on the 'Sea of Japan' side, opposite from the tsunamis though...thankfully. Not getting the most powerful earthquakes, just tons of aftershocks that keep the earth rolling though.
I was in Honolulu exactly one month ago, and I'd know I'd have freaked out if this had happened then. I have a friend in Honolulu, and she's a bit scared, but okay.
My thoughts, and good wishes to the people of the beautiful state of Hawaii.
Napo'opo'o Beach, Kona side of Big Island slammed hard according to a friend. Star-Advertiser said: At Napoopoo at Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island, one wave reached at least 100 feet inland and an elevation of 11 or 12 feet, Fryer said.
Water was over Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona, at least one hotel lobby flooded.
I see that water rushed ashore at least 11 feet high near Kealakekua Bay, on the west side of the Big Island. And King Kamehameha Hotel has a foot of water in the lobby.
It tears me up to see the coverage in Japan. I cannot even imagine what they have gone through. My thoughts are with all of our brothers and sisters who have died, and to the survivors who WILL overcome this great catastrophe. Peace be with all of you!!!! Aloha!!!!!!!
The boats still aren't allowed to come back into the Ala Wai harbor, but they should be allowed back in soon. I don't know if there was any damage to the boats that stayed. California coast is getting tsunami waves now. Boats loose and playing bumper boat in Santa Cruz.
Most of the news is of either Santa Cruz or Japan at the moment, so I don't know if there was much local damage. We are well able sea level and not going anywhere.
Anyone know if the docks in Honolulu had any damage?
Anyone know if Hilo was damaged?
The 4.5 (?) four point whatever earthquake wasn't too bad. Sort of a lengthy rolly kind of earthquake without any hard shocks.
TigerBeer, are you close to the nuclear power plant which had problems with the cooling towers? They are sending coolant from the U.S. but it's going to take awhile to get it there. The power is out for 4 million folks there. If you are downwind of the power plant, is it possible to evacuate or do you have a safe place from nuclear fallout?
The damage is huge and Japan has been building for earthquakes for a long time. Even with all their earthquake construction methods there is still huge amounts of damage, had they not been building with earthquake preventative methods it could have been even worse.

Here in Volcano it felt like a big truck hitting the side of the house.
