I do appreciate that whtviper, i do. But i was hoping to get what locals think is the best, since they live there and will know what is good and what is not. Better then 100 tourists could no offense. Today in this day and age i think anyone can get any kind of info off the net. Kinda making a site like this obsolete. But then again, theres nothing like talking to live people.
The very best place to buy dried spices is Kokua Market by King St. and University Ave. In one corner where the produce is, they have a gazillion different dried spices like bay leaves, oregano, madras Indian curry powder, whole black peppercorns and even saffron. Many different types of tea all sold in bulk quantity.
What you do is get the small plastic bags that are provided there and then use a scoop to buy as much quantity as you want, stick the large sticky dot label and write the UPC code on it before taking it to the cashier.
It's so much cheaper than even buying spices at the commissary! A small plastic bag of whole black peppercorns that will refill your spice jar at home is only 98cents. Compare this to buying a small jar of it at any grocery store and its at least $6 to $8.
I don't normally have a sweet tooth, but I love the guava and lilikoi bars from Sconees Bakery in Kaimuki. Sconees Bakery - Kaimuki - Honolulu, HI. I always pick up a small box of them if I'm in the area.

Since my parents are getting to their mid to late seventies, my mom in particular has become somewhat of a health food "nut". I introduced them to Kokua Market and now she gets her flax seed, rolled oats, lentils and other organic beans from there saying it's even cheaper than the commissary, or by ordering it online.
