I never believed that WHO ranking. It's hard to believe that USA is ranked only two above Cuba (#37 to 39). And I've always have heard of issues in the UK health care system (access). Our country spends $10k/population. Are we seriously that bad - expensive maybe, but quality? I seriously doubt that.

Yes. We are that bad. Sure, you can hear rumors of issues in the UK system, but how many UK citizens do you actually know? The people in the UK love their health care system. The London Olympics were dedicated to their beloved NHS. My husband is from the UK and misses that system a lot. My own UK relatives love it too. An aunt was going to have to wait a few months for a knee replacement if she wanted it for free--but they bought private insurance so she had it right away. And the private insurance is cheap; they are not rich. She just wanted the surgery right away so that they could go on vacation.

I'm glad my grandchildren are growing up in the UK, not here. When they're sick they go to the doctor--and that's whether dad is between jobs or not.

America has a stupid electorate and evil, craven politicians. It is as simple as that. This stupid electorate voted for the know-nothing, care-nothing liar-in-chief, and would follow the imbecile over a cliff. They blather on about socialism, that health care is not a right, and demand people be financially punished if they lose a job and their insurance along with it, or are born with a birth defect, and then have the stupidity to rail and rail on abortion and right-to-life - at the very same time they are refusing to guarantee health care and a right-to-life for those already born. You can't make this stuff up.

no different than what most of us do here - and the world comes to our universities to learn to be physicians - not Cuba.

We weren't discussing Cuba. Someone mentioned the UK's health system. People from here certainly DO go to the UK for college. And there are plenty of people here who wouldn't be able to take their kids to the doctor if they lost their job. In the UK, everyone has healthcare no matter what.

Cuba ??? has nothing to do with anything.

Yes, yes, yes.....and I bet you can go on about all the high tech procedures we do in this country as well.

The reality is that medicine is quite good in this country for the well-to-do and the upper middle class. Its also pretty good for some blue collar people who are fortunate enough to have access to a Cadillac health insurance plan.

However, that's not the way a health care system is measured. Its measured by which countries provide the best care all-around. Countries with universal health care learn quickly that the key to keeping costs down are prevention programs. Everyone with high blood pressure gets on a prescription to lower it. Everyone with high cholesterol gets put on statins to lower their cholesterol. All vaccine preventable disease is prevented by a vigorous vaccination program. Everyone with diabetes is given a blood monitor and free test strips. A diabetes educator spends hours training them how to best keep blood sugars down so that kidney failure and neuropathy can be prevented. If the alternative is paying for kidney dialysis, diabetes education can be a cheap, cost effective investment. But heaven forbid we approach health care in that fashion here in the USA.

In the USA, we may do a good job with coronary bypass surgery, but we have lots of strokes and heart attacks because of barriers that certain economic groups have in obtaining the medications that would prevent these problems. We may have perfected laser eye surgery for retinopathy to an art, but we do little to prevent diabetes complications.

I don't doubt that the USA's ranking on a study like this is low because we have a for-profit health care system and there is little money to be made in prevention.

Not neccessarily true. Perhaps by raw number but not by percentages.

Cuba is famous for health care help in the third world and training physicians.

Sure it was in the post I made and you quoted. I seriously doubt this WHO ranking is accurate when The USA and Cuba are practically the same ranking.

And again Cuba is famous for health care in some circles. I am not surprised it is ranked about the same as the US. What that says is how bad the US is...
