My favorite non-destructive treatment is a shower spray as hot as I can stand it. It's almost as good as scratching but without the risk of breaking the skin. Then an application of anti-itch creme.
Cooling the skin off with cold water, ice or volatile liquid (like alcohol or menthol type stuff) applications will give you temporary relief. Warming it usually makes it worse.
More important is to figure out the cause: simple dry skin, dermatitis, infestation, infection (like early shingles or yeast) are common. Cancer or causes of elevated calcium levels, or liver or renal diseases need to be considered if it's not just a day or three long problem.
Yes this time of the year is dry skin season. We use Vaseline Intensive Care to eliminate dry skin. Sometimes we also add to the VIC an aloe vera product. Works wonders.
