It's an addiction;

Sorry, but especially since the warnings came out, on the very pack of cancer sticks one buys, you have to be crazy to continue.

Smoking is not good; it is not cool. I have read the posts about not being able to quit. There is a difference between not being able to do something, and not WANTING to do something.

It is tough; but it can be done, if the person truly desires it to be so.
I agree. People make very stupid choices when it comes to their health. I am 44 years old and never ever smoked, but got plenty of second hand smoke from my Dad, who died of lung cancer at 49. My father in law, whom I never got a chance to meet, also died of lung cancer, when my husband was only 14 years old. Back in the "old days" people didn't know about the dangers of smoking, but now they do, heck, I always knew and I am no spring chicken.

If someone wants to quit, they can do it, but they have to want to do it! Every person I know that really wanted to, has stopped smoking. Those that only tried because their partner was urging them, or a doctor, failed.

Smokers smell nasty, their clothing smells and it doesn't look "cool" at all, it just makes you look like you don't care about yourself to me.

yes but if you are 14 and feeling socially awkward then you may take that first cigarette offered to you by one of the kids in the crowd.

it IS a drug! that's why it's hard to quit. and i dont mean just "hard", i mean the hardest thing you've ever done in your ENTIRE life (for alot of people)

i found that the first 3 days were the easiest and it got harder as time went by. some people go into a depression and start crying and getting extremely irritable also when not smoking.

We have all our things to calm ourself but the addiction of drugs (or drinking) is the worse. It is not cool and when i look i them i think too that they don't care about them self.
Other addictions are of course very bad for the health too, eating too much or not eating but i think it comes from mentally ills, like depression.
There is people who decide to quit smoking but begin to eat a lot. I knew someone in this case, he took like 25 pounds in some months.
There are too addictions to "happy pills", sleeping pills. I knew someone who didn't stop to take pills to allay physical pain even if she didn't have any pain, she said it helped her to fall asleep too.

Why not being addicted to relaxation or meditation?! it's better!

Several decades ago, it seemed like everyone smoked. My parents smoked. My grandparents smoked. I even saw my teachers smoking. But now we know that smoking is bad for you. Most of those people who smoked back then (including my parents) are dead or most likely sick.

I don't know why people smoke, but I think education has something to do with it. Not to sound snobby (because I am far from that), but studies show that nowadays, smokers tend to be poorly educated. While I do think addiction is real, I think for some, they truly do not understand the risk associated with smoking.

Hi there. Now you have. Pleased to meet you!
I smoked as a teen cause I liked it - went great with all the alcohol!
Had a cough cause I was sick (at 19) and just stopped.
Started again when I was around 28, but only a few a day cause I didn't drink anymore.
Finally stopped when my heart was acting funny. (arythmia? I have it I don't I have it I don't - doctors suck! They don't know SH*T! )
I was between 34 & 36 - don't remember... I'm 41 now.
I just don't have an addictive personality. (luckily!)

My grandfather died at 38 years of age from lung cancer - he never smoked a day in his life. In fact, he had a reaction to smoking and couldn't be around smokers at all.

Not all people who smoke die young and not all non-smokers live long fruitful lives.

I have never actually smoked in my life.
But, I have considered it because I know this may seem weird, but I love the smell of cigarette smoke on a person.
I don't know if it's because my dad use to smoke when I was younger.
